1 Cor. 6:12-20

Glorify God with your body

1 Corinthians 6:12–20 – [12] “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything. [13] “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food”—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. [14] And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. [15] Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! [16] Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.” [17] But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. [18] Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. [19] Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, [20] for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. (ESV)

Verses 12 & 20 are the bookends of the text. We have freedom, yet we are to glorify God because of our/that freedom.

1 Cor. 6:9-11 – a quick peak at the previous verses.

The redeemed and unredeemed.  The righteous and unrighteous.  Inheriting and not inheriting the Kingdom

What sets them apart.  There has been a SPIRITUAL TRANSFORMATION

  • Washed – a new life
  • Sanctified – a new behavior
  • Justified – a new standing
    • In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ & by the Spirit of God.

THEREFORE…vv. 12-20 is possible and expected.

All things are lawful

  • We do have freedom outside the Word/Commands/Precepts of God. We can do as we wish, but it does come with a cost.

Not all things are helpful/profitable

  • Helpful, worthwhile, advisable, profitable

I should not be enslaved/mastered by anything

  • The problem is allowing a God given desire to take hold of us.
    • If it feels good do it.
    • Following a dream…this must be what God wants, because it feels so right.

Romans 6:1-4; 12-14 (Let no sin reign)

1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. 13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. 14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

Do you not know?

  • Your bodies are members of Christ
    • When we get saved we become one with Christ

Eph. 1:1-14 (We are in HIM)

Eph. 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, 8 which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight 9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, 12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory

  • He who is joined becomes one body with them

  • Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God.

Concluding Thoughts:

  • We are not our own
  • You were bought with a price
  • Glorify God with your body
