John 6:35-40 – I am the bread of life (part 2)

WHAT MAKES THIS STATEMENT TRUE?

Why we can believe it.

Intro:

  • Jesus statement is very authoritative and bold. Declaring who He is, and what He came to do.
  • He is greater than Moses and his bread. Moses was only pointing to the coming Christ.
  • Yet, the response was not received very will which we learned in chp. 2 that Jesus already knew their heart (all men’s heart)
  • Do I really believe v. 35? Do I believe is for myself and when I share with others?  If we really did believe this, then you would think our live would be so much different?
  • These verses give us great encouragement and hope in WHY we can trust that JESUS is the bread of life. ALL THAT WE NEED. (spiritual, physical, emotional)

An authoritative statement – I am the Bread of Life, and whoever comes and believes will never hunger and thirst

35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

  • I am God, I am the great I am
    • 3:14 – I AM to Moses.
    • 1:18. Who is and was and is to come.
  • Bread…the basics of life and necessity
    • Not just sustain life, but eternal life
    • Not the moment, for eternity
  • Your only satisfaction. All you need….I AM WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN MISSING AND LOOKING FOR.
  • Whoever comes to me – Comes to me all you that are heavy laden and I will give you rest. (Mt. 11)
  • Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.
    • COMING MEANS YOU BELIEVE, BELIEVE MEANS THAT YOU HAVE COME…..HEAD AND HEART.
  • NEVER….hunger or thirst

Their unbelief and His response.

36 But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe

  • Context is key. Just as in Chap. 2 and 5 the people did not believe who He was and what He came to do.
  • These words would have been heard by the disciples. Maybe as he peered into their heart, he knew that where struggling with belief.
  • 37-40 teach that God has a plan. He is in control of redemptive history.  All is not lost, because this are not believing in Him.

What God has started.  God will bring to completion

37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.

Building a good theological foundation: (We must get God right)

  • He is all powerful – omnipotent
  • He is all knowing/all seeing/all wise – omniscient
  • He is ever-present – omnipresent

  1. His Attributes
    1. God is loving, wise, fair and just, merciful,
    2. God is a jealous God –
      1. For His glory and the faithfulness of His people
      2. Exodus 20:4-5 says, “You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God…” Notice that God is jealous when someone gives to another something that rightly belongs to Him.

  1. His involvement
    1. God is actively involved with His creation….HIS CREATION.
      • He did not get things going and just step aside, His sovereignty allows Him to be involved in all things within His creation.

  1. His will
    1. Sovereign /Secret Will
      1. The Secret things belong to God
    2. Moral/Revealed Will
      1. What He has given and shown us through His word.

  1. His plan
    1. God’s Sovereignty – Real Human Choices/Human responsibility
    2. Friends not enemies – We do not reconcile friends.

Building on that  foundation

  1. All that the FATHER GIVES
    1. FOR ALL HAVE SINNED – because we are sinners we need a Savior.
    2. We are dead, so God must make us alive
  1. WILL COME
    1. God is God and has a plan. That plan is redemption.
  1. WHOEVER COMES TO ME I WILL NEVER CAST OUT
    1. That plan has always involved His greatest creation….People.
    2. In the OT it was the nation of Israel, in the New Covenant it is the church.
    3. All the redeemed in Christ. The Church.  The Children of God (John 1:12)

It has been accomplished through the Gospel

The life, death, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ

38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

  • THE POWER OF THE GOSPEL (Justification, Sanc., Glori)
  • HE HAS GIVEN ME – GOD’S FAVOR
    • Gives, Draws, Calls
  • EVERYONE WHO LOOKS and BELIEVES – FAITH
    • Look, Believe, Obey, Follow
  • Lose nothing….no one
  • But bring it to completion.   His forever
