John 19:31-20:10 – Jesus death, burial, & resurrection

HE IS KING AND HE IS ALIVE!

[31] Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. [32] So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. [33] But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. [34] But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. [35] He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. [36] For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” [37] And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.”

[38] After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. [39] Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. [40] So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. [41] Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. [42] So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there. (ESV)

John 20:[1] Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. [2] So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” [3] So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. [4] Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. [5] And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. [6] Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, [7] and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. [8] Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; [9] for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. [10] Then the disciples went back to their homes. (ESV)

His Death – vv. 31-37

Legs not broken

  • 12:46 – no bones broken for the Passover lamb
  • 34:20 – prophecy fulfilled

Exodus 12:46 – [46] It shall be eaten in one house; you shall not take any of the flesh outside the house, and you shall not break any of its bones. (ESV)

Psalm 34:20 – [20] He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken. (ESV)

Body pierced – Blood and water – He really died

  • 12:10 – fulfilled, but ultimately fulfilled Rev. 1:7

Zechariah 12:10 – [10] “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn. (ESV)

Revelation 1:7 – [7] Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen. (ESV)

  • He was a real person who was really died
  • 9:00 am – 3:00pm – 6 hours. He died on His terms
  • He died according to God’s redemptive plan
  • His life was not taken, but rather… HE GAVE IT UP.
  • The Jews wanted the bodies to be down so that it would not desecrate the Passover
    • WHAT HYPOCRISY. WE DO NOT WANT TO DEFILE THE PASSOVER.

His Burial – vv. 38-42

Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. v. 41

It was in a garden that Adam and Eve sinned, and it was in THIS garden that sin was dealt with.  He was born of a virgin and laid into a virgin tomb.

Joseph of Arimathea

  • Rich (fulfilled Is. 53:9), part of the Sanhedrin
  • Good and righteous man. Luke 23:50
  • Buried Jesus in his own tomb Matt. 27:60

Nicodemus

  • First came to Christ at night. John 3:1-21
  • Amount of spices used was enough for a royal burial.

While Jesus was alive they feared the publicity, but now he has openly made his statement for Christ.

From birth to death.  He was KING

  • Gabriel told Mary Jesus was the King. Luke 1:32-33
  • The Magi came to worship the King
  • Pilates sign proclaimed Him the King
  • They buried His with the spices for The King

HE WAS BORN THE KING, HE LIVED AS THE KING, AND DIED AS THE KING!!!

His Resurrection – 20:1-10

Psalm 16:9–10 – [9] Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. [10] For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. (ESV)

First day of the week.  Lord’s Day. (Friday night, Saturday, Sunday morning – 3 days)

  • Sabbath was a day of rest after the finished work of the OT. CREATION
  • Lord’s Day is the finished work of the NT. NEW CREATION

Lazarus stone was rolled way by man.  Jesus’s stone was rolled away by God/angels.

Mary Magdalene

  • Demons cast out off
  • Her devotion.
    • Alone, dark, willing to face Roman guards (Matt. 27:66)
  • Much indebted to Christ for the forgiveness of sin.
    • THIS IS MISSING TODAY. WE THINK SO LITTLE OF OUR SAVIOR BECAUSE WE THINK SO LITTLE OF OUR SIN.

Peter and John

  • Would have taken 2 to be a witness. There was to be no doubt to His resurrection. (many things to consider when we think of Peter and John and what they could have been discussing this morning when Mary came.  John could have been filling Peter in on all the Jesus said from the cross…???)

Grave clothes not in disarray (not taken)

  • The language conveys that they were still in the form of a body. No unwrapping.
  • LAZARUS NEEDED HELP WITH HIS GRAVE CLOTHS, JESUS DID NOT.

John saw and believed.

  • Saw and perceived. v. 8 (Glance v. 5)

For as yet, did not understand the scripture.

  • The power of the Spirit and the Word
  • The saw and believed but not until the Spirit open their heart and mind did they truly believe.
  • They went from hanging out in the upper room and fishing boats to taking the Gospel to the ends of the earth.

1 Peter 1:8–9 – [8] Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, [9] obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. (ESV)

We do not have to see the stone rolled away or see the empty tomb, or see the grave clothes to believe.  WE HAVE THE SPIRIT OF GOD AND THE WORD OF GOD SO THAT WE CAN BELIEVE.

Jesus did die, He was buried, He did rise from the grave.  He did does this so that MAN MAY REPENT OF THEIR SIN AND PLACE THEIR FAITH IN HIM.  THE SPIRIT ITSELF TESTIFIES THAT HE IS KING!!!!!!!
