Learn from the Past – Live for Tomorrow

Outline up to this point:

Moses’ First Sermon 1:6-4:43

What God Has Done for Israel

  1. The Command to Leave Horeb – 1:6-8
  2. The Appointment of Leaders – 1:9-18
  3. The Spies Sent Out – 1:19-25
  4. The Refusal to Enter the Land – 1:26-46
  5. The Journey from Kadesh to the Plains Moab – 2:1-23
  6. The Conquest of East Jordan – 2:24-3:11
  7. The Division of the Land – 3:12-20
  8. The Transition of Leadership From Moses to Joshua – 3:21-22
  9. The Prayer of Moses – 3:23-29

The Journey from Kadesh to Moab – 2:1-23

The children of the faithless generation

  • Turn northward
  • Pass Through
  • Be Very Careful
  • Cross over

Edom – Descendants of Esau (Jacob’s twin)

Moab – Descendants of Lot

Ammon – Descendants of Lot

TRUTHS:

God is Faithful to His Promises

  • They will enter the land.  Regardless of how big the enemy was. – 1 John 4:4
  • The faithless will not – Up to 2 Million could have perished

Our decisions come with real consequences, but God is always working behind the scenesAmos 9:7, Acts 17:24-26

The Conquest of East Jordan – 2:24-3:11

6 Imperatives

Rise up – Set out – Go over – Begin – Take possession – Contend in battle

2 promises

  1. You will take the land
  2. My greatness will be known (dread and fear to all those under heaven)

TRUTHS:

With Courage and Faith comes victory. (takes courage to obey)

  • Trust and Obey for there no other way.

The truth is what God did for them, not what they did for God (conquering the Land)

  • They just believed He would do what He said He would do.

The Division of the Land – 3:12-20

Reuben and Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh had very large flocks and desired to live in the area east of the Jordan.  The area of east of the Jordan was seen as an excellent area for their needs. (Numbers 32:1-42)

They were granted the land but had to help the others with the conquest of the land west of the Jordan.

TRUTHS:

Be careful what you THINK you need.  What seemed to make sense at the time unraveled greatly in the future. (Col 3:1-2 Set you mind, seek after things that ARE ABOVE)

The Transition of Leadership From Moses to Joshua – 3:21-22

You shall not fear…THE LORD GOD FIGHTS FOR YOU

TRUTHS:

Our past victories while important should keep us humble and relying on Him (Moses having to transfer leadership to Joshua)

God works in mysterious ways to develop and call out leaders.

The Prayer of Moses – 3:23-29

  • He can literally see the promise land.
  • He petitions the LORD.  Can I go in?
  • The answer is no.

TRUTHS:

Moses’ sin was a sin against God and His holiness. Numbers 20:1-13  (against His deity, I know better and can do it on my own)

Yet, God’s grace was poured out on Moses in spite of his disobedience.

  • His work was not in vain – passed the torch of leadership
  • Stood with Jesus in the Promise Land at the transfiguration Matthew 17:1-3

Conclusion:

WE CAN TRUST IN GOD’S

  • Promises, Provision, Guidance, Deliverance

HOPE IN THE FUTURE IS ROOTED IN THE PAST

  • Our resurrection because of Christ’s resurrection – 1 Cor. 15:20-23

SCRIPTURE:

1 John 4:4 – Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. (ESV)

Amos 9:7 – “Are you not like the Cushites to me,O people of Israel?” declares the LORD. “Did I not bring up Israel from the land of Egypt, and the Philistines from Caphtor and the Syrians from Kir? (ESV)

Acts 17:22–26 – [22] So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. [23] For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: ‘To the unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. [24] The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, [25] nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. [26] And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, (ESV)

Colossians 3:1–4 – [1] If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. [2] Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. [3] For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. [4] When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. (ESV)

1 Corinthians 15:20–23 – [20] But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. [21] For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. [22] For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. [23] But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. (ESV)
