Philippians 4:8-9

My teaching notes for Wednesday night, Dec. 1st. Remember, these are my personal study notes and not a manuscript of the teaching. They are provided to help you follow the sermon as you listen each week. The church provides a live stream of the service each Wednesday at 6:30 on Facebook at Tabernacle Facebook Page. We also provide the services through YouTube later on Wednesday evening at TAB YouTube. You can also find our Worship Guides, Family Devotional Guides, Prayer Lists and other resources at our Church Website.

Philippians 4:8-9

[8] Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. [9] What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. (ESV)

First things first:

  • What we think is what we become
  • Our thoughts shape our behavior…how we behave indicates how we think (and who we are)

A mind set upon the world (Values, decisions, and desires apart from the Holiness and truth of God) and self (flesh) is what leads to worry, anxiety, emptiness and lack of peace.

Ephesians 4:20-24 – But you have not so learned Christ, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.

2 Cor. 10:5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ

Romans 12:1-2 – I beseech you therefore brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.  And do not be conformed to the world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Whatever things are TRUE – real & genuine.

Whatever things are HONORABLE – worthy & respected

What ever things are JUST – right.

  • Doing right between God and man.

What ever things are PURE – morally clean & spotless

What ever things are LOVELY – pleasing, gracious.

  • Pleasing…lifting others up and not tearing down.

What ever things are of COMMENDABLE– reputable

If there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

Our Life – Practice these things – v. 9

What you have LEARNED

What you have RECEIVED

What you have HEARD

What you have SEEN

Practice these things
