The church provides a live stream of the service each Sunday at 10:45 on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/firstbaptistavonpark/  We also provide the services through our website by Sunday afternoon at www.fbcap.net

INTRO:
  • By Jewish tradition there are 613 laws in the Pentateuch (Gen-Deut)
  • While not binding they are important, and their teaching is the basis of TRUE BIBLICAL RELATIONSHIPS…GOD and OTHERS. (Mat. 22:34-40 – Love God and Love others)
  • They reveal our true heart.  Jesus and the rich ruler. Mark 10:17-22
  • The 10 lay the foundation for the 613.
  • The 1st commandment is the foundational commandment for all other commandments and law.
  • WITHOUT A TRUE UNDERSTANDING OF GOD AND A PROPER RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM…NOTHING ELSE WILL MATTER.
  • Remember, the statues, rules, and law were given to encourage and teach a proper covenantal relationship with God and with others (vertical and horizontal)

THEREFORE…Commandment 1 is crucial AS WE UNDERSTAND:

  1. Who God is
  2. What God has done
  3. How we must respond.

Who God Is – v. 6a

I AM

  • Moses at the burning bush – Exodus 3
  • Holy, Unique
  • Jesus and the 7 I Am’s in John’s Gospel.

LORD your God

  • Personal
  • Sovereign, Righteous Ruler

Our faith is not grounded on how hard we believe in something, but in WHOM we believe (Kevin DeYoung)

What He Has Done – v. 6b

Who brough YOU

  • Chosen, Set Apart, His Special People
  • Exodus . 2:24 – “Heard their groaning and remembered His Covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob”
  • OT – The Nation of Israel
  • NT – Believers/The Church (believers are the church)

OUT OF  the Land of Egypt out of the House of Slavery

  • Delivered
    • These words are not WORD OVER A CONQUERED FOE, BUT RATHER THESE COMMANDMENTS ARE FOR THOSE THAT HAVE BEEN REDEEMED.
  • From Bondage
  • Deliverance was and is not impossible on their own.

Romans 6:6–7 – [6] We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. [7] For one who has died has been set free from sin. (ESV)

Galatians 5:1 – For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. (ESV)

Shane and Shane – “Liberty”

For freedom You set me free
And yes, I am free indeed
You rewrote my name
And unshackled my shame
You opened my eyes to see
I am free

DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME:

  • OT – Celebration of the Passover was a reminder to the people
  • NT – Celebration of the Lord’s Supper is a reminder to His people.

How We Must Respond – v. 7

You shall have no other gods before me

Joshua 24:14 – Joshua renewing the covenant in Shechem

1 King 18:21 – Elijah at Mt. Carmel.

Matt. 6:24 – No one can serve two masters.

NOT AND

  • And Baal, And Asherah, and Money
  • TODAY….AND. AND. AND

BUT GOD ALONE.

CONCLUSION: God Alone = Jesus Alone

At Mt. Sinai – GOD IS GOD ALONE

At Mt of Transfiguration – THIS IS MY BELOVED SON…LISTEN TO HIM

Mark 9:2–8 – [2] And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, [3] and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. [4] And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. [5] And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” [6] For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. [7] And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” [8] And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only. (ESV)

OT – LISTEN and OBEY…BECAUSE YOU KNOW, LOVE, FEAR, TRUST.

NT – LISTEN and OBEY…BECAUSE YOU KNOW, LOVE, FEAR, TRUST.

1 Cor 8:4-6 – Paul to the church of Corinth

[4] Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that “an idol has no real existence,” and that “there is no God but one.” [5] For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”—[6] yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist. (ESV)

SCRIPTURE:

Matthew 22:34–40 – [34] But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. [35] And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. [36] “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” [37] And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. [38] This is the great and first commandment. [39] And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. [40] On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” (ESV)

Mark 10:17–22 – [17] And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” [18] And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. [19] You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” [20] And he said to him, “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.” [21] And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” [22] Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. (ESV)

But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” (ESV)

1 Kings 18:21 – [21] And Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” And the people did not answer him a word. (ESV)
