The Gospel.  The Good News of Jesus Christ.

  • Who He is
  • What He came to do
  • What it means to you and I

 

Who He is – GOD

 

John 1:1–5 – [1] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. [2] He was in the beginning with God. [3] All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. [4] In him was life, and the life was the light of men. [5] The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (ESV)

In the beginning

  • The Word – His deity

 

The Gospel fulfills all the promises of the OT

Matt. 1:1-17

  • Lineage from King David and Abraham
  • All the stories and promises of the Bible point to the coming of Jesus.
  • 14 generations point to God’s purpose and perfect plan.

 

What He came to do

Redeem, Give New Life, Restore, Save, Deliver

 

Matt. 4:23 & Matt. 9:35 (USHER IN THE COVENANT)

  • Proclaiming the Gospel of the Kingdom (as He went/ministered)
  • It is a message of newness. NEW KINGDOM. NEW LIFE. NEW KING.
  • NEW KING. Leading His People. Lord and Ruler.
    • REIGN, RULE, RELATIONSHIP

 

Matt. 24:14

  • The Gospel of the Kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world.
  • (the fulfillment of the Great Commission)

 

Matthew 1:18–21 – [18] Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. [19] And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. [20] But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. [21] She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” (ESV)

 

Matthew 26:26–29 – [26] Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” [27] And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, [28] for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. [29] I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” (ESV)

 

This was accomplished on the Cross

1 Peter 3:18 – For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, (ESV).

 

John 19:30 – It is finished

 

The was accomplished at the resurrection

Romans 6:1–6 – [1] What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? [2] By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? [3] Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? [4] We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

[5] For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. [6] We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. (ESV)

This was accomplished by the coming of the Spirit

Acts 1:8 – But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (ESV)

 

What is means to us. (Observe Communion)

  • Recognize who Christ is.
  • What He did.
  • How it impacts our life.

 

We must repent of our sin and place our faith in Christ.

  1. He Gave His Life
  2. He Shed His Blood

 

We must recognize our need and receive forgiveness of Sin.

Ephesians 2:8–10 – [8] For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, [9] not a result of works, so that no one may boast. [10] For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (ESV)
