His Triumphant Entry
John 12:12–19 – [12] The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. [13] So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” [14] And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,
[15] “Fear not, daughter of Zion;
behold, your king is coming,
sitting on a donkey’s colt!”
[16] His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. [17] The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. [18] The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. [19] So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.” (ESV)
Background:
- In all 4 Gospels
- The only public demonstration Christ allowed.
- Is fulfillment of OT prophecy
The Timing:
God’s Perfect Timetable – The DAY of His entry.
- Not yet. Waiting on the ordained time.
- 6:15 – perceiving they were about to take Him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.
- They wanted Jesus to be King on their terms. But we must come to King Jesus on His term. (atonement for sin, not a military/political ruler)
- 7:1-4 – My time has not yet come.
- 6:15 – perceiving they were about to take Him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.
- The Now – Scripture is fulfilled
- Jesus was forcing their hand. He knew the TRUE LAMB OF GOD would be sacrificed during the time of the Passover.
- Gen 49:9-11 – Jacobs prophecy for his descendants on the last days. The scepter/ruler will not depart from Judah. Vine – Israel. Choice vine – Christ.
- Dan 9:24-27 – Israel’s captivity in Babylon. The time form then to the time of their transgressions should be finished and everlasting righteousness brought in.
- 9:9 – The donkey. Young. Never ridden. In the sacrificial law it must be an animal that has never been worked.
- BE SILENT…then the ROCKS will CRY OUT (Luke)
The Crowd:
- Pilgrims from outside Judea
- Locals from the area. Would have been part of the crowd when Lazarus was raised from the dead.
- Palm branches – joy/celebration
- He is king. At his birth. HE IS KING. THE WISE MEN. HE IS KING. His last public entrance into the city. HE IS KING
- Religious leaders
- Never understand who He is, where He is from, Why He came.
The Reason:
To usher in:
PEACE AND VICTORY
- Welcome Him with palm branches as garments as a symbol of peace and victory (Rev. 7:9) Revelation 7:9–12 – [9] After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, [10] and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” [11] And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, [12] saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.” (ESV)
- Jerusalem is the “City of peace”
- They were hoping that Jesus would bring peace, yet Jesus knew of all the struggles that lay ahead.
- Angels at His birth – “Peace on Earth” Luke 2:12-14
- Jesus during His ministry – “Division on Earth Luke 12:51
- Crowd proclaimed – “Peace in Heaven” Luke 19:38. IF THEY ONLY KNEW!
SALVATION
- Hosanna – “Save”
HIS KINGDOM/RULE
- King of Israel – Next time the nation of Israel will see King Jesus will be when He returns triumphantly. ( 19:11) Revelation 19:11–16 – [11] Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. [12] His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. [13] He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. [14] And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. [15] From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. [16] On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords. (ESV)
- He will come in glory
- The armies of heaven will accompany Him
- As great ruler and judge
- Scene of true victory as He establishes His Kingdom
