John 13:21-30 – The heart of betrayal

John 13:21–30 – [21] After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” [22] The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. [23] One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table at Jesus’ side, [24] so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking. [25] So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” [26] Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. [27] Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” [28] Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. [29] Some thought that, because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. [30] So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night.

 

INTRO:

From foot washing to betrayal. From serving to betraying.  We see the true heart of Jesus and then we see the true heart of Judas.  From verses 21-30 we see the heart of betrayal from the heart of Jesus and the heart of Judas.

 

John 13:21-30 – The Heart of Betrayal

 

Troubled in Spirit

  • 11:33, 12:27
  • The betrayal
  • Judas ultimate destiny
  • The anguish of Calvary

 

One of you will betray me

  • The personal aspect of Judas
  • Walked with Jesus. Witnessed all the miracles, signs, and ministry of Jesus.
  • Was called by Jesus. Jesus washed his feet.
  • THE ULTIMATE EXAMPLE OF KNOWING JESUS AND NOT KNOWING JESUS.

 

It is He whom I will give this morsel

  • Jesus knew from the beginning. 6:64, 70
  • It was part of God’s purpose and plan. ALL THINGS ARE PART OF GOD’S PURPOSE AND PLAN.

 

Satan entered him

  • Judas had known he would betray Him. Matthew 26:14-16
  • He was at the point of no return.
  • All the opportunities have passed. HARDENED HEART 12:40
  • He has lived with Christ for 3 years, ministered with Christ, seen the miracles… YET, would not embrace Him for who he was.
  • He wanted Jesus on his own terms.  Just like the religious leaders.

 

What you are going to do, do quickly

  • Even Satan had entered him, Jesus was the one in charge. He did not compel Judas to do it.
  • Jesus knew the destiny of this night.
  • His betrayal, arrest, trial, and execution

 

After receiving the morsel, He immediately went out

  • He left here, but 12:5 was probably the straw that broke the camel’s back for Judas.
  • Judas fooled everyone. No one knew he was going to do what he was going to do.  He lived life like a true disciple, but his heart was full of selfish ambition and deceit.
  • Peter would make a mess of things, but His heart was right. Because his heart was right he was able to grow and mature. (The longer Judas lived with a wicked heart the more treacherous his life became.

 

And it was night

  • The darkness of evil and sin.
  • Compared to the LIGHT. 1:5, 8:12, 12:35
