John 4:1-26
The offer of Jesus to the woman at the well
vv. 1-12 – True Grace
CONSIDER THE SAVIOR – He came to seek and save that which was lost
- 300 references to the coming Messiah and Jesus fulfills them all.
- 3:15 & Mal. 3:1
CONSIDER THE PLACE – Samaria
- The capital of Northern Kingdom.
- Assyrians in 722 BC. Some exiled others intermarried with Assyrians. “half breeds”
- Ezra we learn there was an attempted for the Samarians to help rebuild the temple but were denied. They built their own temple. Since then there was great animosity.
- Off all places to not go…this was it.
CONSIDER THE PERSON – Why the woman, why not Nicodemus
- Religious, immoral
- Learned theologian, uneducated
- Recognized Jesus as a teacher, clueless who Jesus was
- Wealthy, poor
- Member of the elite in society, bottom rung on the ladder
vv. 13-15 (v. 10) – True Satisfaction
- Living water v. 10
- OT Cleansing/Renewal
- John 3 – born again. Spirit and Water
- Never thirst again
- Internal
- Dynamic and Growing
- NEW CREATION – 2 Cor. 5:17
- John 1:13 – From God. From the will of God
- Old things have passed away. New and growing
- NEW CREATION – 2 Cor. 5:17
vv. 16-26 – True Worship
TRUE WORSHIP IS ALWAYS A HEART ISSUE!!
- Jesus saw her heart! Jesus knew her! (a great example of Biblical election)
- Jesus wants the heart
- Not the place of worship, but the nature of worship
- True worshippers – Spirit and Truth
- Spirit – internal, not external.
- Truth – based on truth. Right in God’s eyes
