John 4:1-26

The offer of Jesus to the woman at the well

vv. 1-12 – True Grace

CONSIDER THE SAVIOR – He came to seek and save that which was lost

  • 300 references to the coming Messiah and Jesus fulfills them all.
  • 3:15 & Mal. 3:1

CONSIDER THE PLACE – Samaria

  • The capital of Northern Kingdom.
  • Assyrians in 722 BC. Some exiled others intermarried with Assyrians.  “half breeds”
  • Ezra we learn there was an attempted for the Samarians to help rebuild the temple but were denied. They built their own temple.  Since then there was great animosity.
  • Off all places to not go…this was it.

CONSIDER THE PERSON – Why the woman, why not Nicodemus

  • Religious, immoral
  • Learned theologian, uneducated
  • Recognized Jesus as a teacher, clueless who Jesus was
  • Wealthy, poor
  • Member of the elite in society, bottom rung on the ladder

vv. 13-15 (v. 10) – True Satisfaction

  • Living water v. 10
    • OT Cleansing/Renewal
    • John 3 – born again. Spirit and Water

  • Never thirst again
    • Internal
    • Dynamic and Growing
      • NEW CREATION – 2 Cor. 5:17
        • John 1:13 – From God. From the will of God
        • Old things have passed away. New and growing

vv. 16-26 – True Worship

TRUE WORSHIP IS ALWAYS A HEART ISSUE!!

  • Jesus saw her heart! Jesus knew her!  (a great example of Biblical election)

  • Jesus wants the heart
    • Not the place of worship, but the nature of worship

  • True worshippers – Spirit and Truth
    • Spirit – internal, not external.
    • Truth – based on truth. Right in God’s eyes
