John 9:35–41

I have seen the light…the grand conclusion

 

[35] Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” [36] He answered, “And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” [37] Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and it is he who is speaking to you.” [38] He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. [39] Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.” [40] Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things, and said to him, “Are we also blind?” [41] Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains. (ESV)

 

 

The beggar and his circumstances

He was physically healed and believed that Jesus did it.

He was about to be spiritually headed and will believe in Jesus to receive it.

 

His current situation (leading up to his conversion)

  1. Ridiculed – by his neighbors
  2. Persecuted – by the religious leaders
  3. Abandoned – by his family
  4. Banished – from the community

 

 

Jesus and his compassion – v. 35

  • 35 – He sought him – JESUS SEEKS THE LOST
    • From the very beginning God’s plan has been about His relationship with Man.
      • God in the beginning in creating the World/Man
      • God calling Abraham and the nation of Israel.
      • God sending His son to redeem mankind
      • God the seeking the Lost
      • God initiating His love with a fallen world

 

  • 36-38 – He healed – JESUS SAVES THE LOST
    • Luke 19:10 – the Son of Man came to seek and save that which was lost. (Zacchaeus)
    • NEXT WEEK John 10

 

 

The beggar and his response – vv. 36-38

  • 35b – Jesus question to the beggar
    • Do you believe
    • Man’s response to what God has done.
      • Belief/Trust – Mind and the heart.

 

  • 36 – Who is he, that I may believe (son of Man)
    • He had never seen Jesus. He had been testifying about him, but never had seen him.

 

  • 37 – Jesus answers. You have seen him.  It is he you are speaking

 

  • 38 – Beggar’s response
    • Lord, I believe. He worshipped Him
    • WITH OUR MIND AND OUR LIFE
    • CONFESSION AND PRAISE
    • DECISION AND DEVOTION

 

 

Jesus concluding words – vv. 39-41

 

  • He came so that those not seeing may see.
    • I ONCE WAS BLIND, BUT NOW I SEE
      • One must understand their condition
      • One must understand their need
      • One must understand their Savior
