The Character of a Disciple – part 2
Matthew 5:1–12 – [1] Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.[2] And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:
[3] “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
[4] “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
[5] “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
[6] “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
[7] “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
[8] “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
[9] “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
[10] “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
[11] “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. [12] Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. (ESV)
Blessed are the merciful
for they shall receive mercy – v. 7
If we understand the mercy we have received form God, then we should be people of mercy.
Matt. 18:21-35 – Parable of the King forgiving… then servant not forgiving.
Luke 10:30-37 – Good Samaritan…who is our neighbor.
Blessed are the pure in heart
for they shall see God – v. 8
Psalm 24:3-4 – Living/Seeing/Experiencing God’s presence…we must have a pure heart.
Heb. 12:14 – Without sanctification we cannot see God.
IT IS NOT OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS THAT ALLOWS THIS, BUT THE FINISHED WORK OF CHRIST. YET, AS WE STRIVE TO LIVE A HOLY/SET APART/DIFFERENT LIFE…THEN WE CAN TRULY EXPERIENCE HIS PRESENCE IN A MORE INTIMATE WAY.
We know when we are there or not!!!!!!!
Blessed are the peacemakers
for they shall be called Sons of God – v. 9
Eph. 2 – Jesus is the ultimate peacemaker.
Examples:
- God with us… through reconciliation. Making peace between God and man through Jesus Christ.
- Man with man… living as peacemakers. Being people of reconciliation.
Bless are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake
for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. – vv. 10-12
Totally opposite of what WE THINK WE SHOULD experience. We want HAPPINESS not PERSECUTION.
- You desire happiness
- You need happiness
- Strive for happiness
Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you on account of Me.
- ON ACCOUNT OF HIM
- Not because of our dogmatic, judgmental attitude, but for living for Him!
Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
- Rejoice and keep rejoicing.
