LIVING ON MISSION

 

Flow of outline gathered from part of the IMB Explore Missions Course

IMB Explore Missions Study

 

  1. Engage with the Gospel
  2. Share the message in their language and challenge them to repent and believe
  3. Disciple new believers
  4. Plant healthy churches
  5. Train leaders (elders/deacons)

 

Engage

Romans 10:14-15

 

A willingness to go to the unreached.

  • People groups – a group of people that have a common language.

 

The strategy:

  • Prayer
  • Creative access – Going to countries in a professional field. Gaining access to meet a specific need.
    • Teaching, Medical, Sports, Agriculture
  • Through Building relationships

 

Share and Challenge

2 Timothy 4:5

 

The strategy:

  • Learn the language
  • Translate the Bible
  • Proclaim the Gospel

 

Adapt to the culture

  • – Me in China
  • Doing what is necessary without compromising the Word.
  • It takes patience and perseverance

 

Disciple Believers

Colossians 1:28

 

Goal is not to add up converts but to multiply disciples.  (People reaching people)

 

The strategy: KNOWLEDGE AND OBEDIENCE

  • Teach the Bible – Yep, it is that simple
  • Reshape world views – The lens through which one understands everything, and it shapes behavior as well as thinking. (How we see and process life)
    • Animism and Tribalism
    • Materialism and Secularism (USA)
  • Teach obedience (followship and Lordship of Christ)
    • Knowledge plus Living/serving/the doing
    • Growing and changing into the likeness of Christ.
      • Personal examination
      • Accountability

 

These are almost impossible without ONE ANOTHER.  Key is establishing a local body of believers that will begin this new life TOGETHER.

Plant and Multiply Churches

 

1 Cor. 12:12-13

 

Church is not a building

  • They did not have specific building in the NT and for a couple of centuries afterward.

 

The church gathers together to worship God, study the Word, exercise spiritual gifts to build each other up, and hold each other accountable.

 

The church scatters to represent Christ and advance the Gospel in the world.

 

There are 2 goals in designing and organizing the life of the Church

  • The church must be obedient to Scripture
  • The church should be as much at home in the local culture as it can be without violating goal 1.

 

God never intended a church to be a gospel dead end street.  Churches must MULTIPLY.

  • Reproducing themselves

 

Train leaders

2 Timothy 2:2

 

Leadership Training – HOW TO LEAD PEOPLE

1 Tim 3:1-7 & Titus 1:5-9

  • Church leaders CHARACTER and HOME LIFE.
  • 1 Tim. 4:12 – Leaders are examples

 

A desire to impact people.

  • Not all wired the same, but the goal should be the same
  • Introvert/extrovert

 

Theological Training – WE CANNOT TEACH WHAT WE DO NOT KNOW.

 

1 Tim 3:2 & Titus 1:9 – Elders/Pastors teach.

  • Biblical Theology – How the Bible fits together.
  • Systematic theology – What the Bible teaches about particular theological subjects.

 

REMEMBER.  TAKES BOTH.

  • How we live Biblically. (So much more that just a moral person)
  • What we know about the Bible

 

SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:

Romans 10:14–15 – [14] How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? [15] And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” (ESV)

 

2 Timothy 4:5 – As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. (ESV)

 

Colossians 1:28 – Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. (ESV)

 

1 Corinthians 12:12–13 – [12] For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. [13] For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. (ESV)

 

2 Timothy 2:2 – and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also. (ESV)

 

1 Timothy 3:1–7 – [1] The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. [2] Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, [3] not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. [4] He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, [5] for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church? [6] He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. [7] Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil. (ESV)

 

Titus 1:5–9 – [5] This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you—[6] if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination. [7] For an overseer, as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, [8] but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. [9] He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it. (ESV)

 

1 Timothy 4:12 – Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. (ESV)
