So Great A Salvation – Christ Alone

Introduction:

At the time of the reformation one of the major points of concern was basically…the Gospel plus something.

  • Gospel plus the sacraments
  • Gospel plus the church
  • Gospel plus indulgences
  • Gospel plus tradition

The Solas were and have become key foundational statements of true biblical and evangelical Christianity.

Yet today I want to consider what CHRIST ALONE means 500 years after the reformation…in our context and culture.

I think today one of the greatest fears should not be the corruption within the church, but the corruption with the way we proclaim the Gospel.

  1. People typically say they believe in God.
  2. People typically say they believe in Jesus.
  3. People typically believe in a real heaven and a real hell.
  4. People typically believe that they are not as bad as others and that because they believe in 1-3 that they are basically o.k. with God.

This may sound good at first glance, but it is not good at all.  Righteousness before God (being OK with God) comes only through the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  • Who He is. Why He came from. What He did.  What it means to us.
  • There is nothing we can do to be OK with God. That is what makes the GOOD NEWS the GOOD NEWS.  Jesus Alone has done it.
  • Jesus Christ is the only incarnate self-revelation of God and redeemer of humanity.

A Look at the Word:

Romans 5:12-17 – [12] Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—[13] for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. [14] Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.

[15] But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. [16] And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. [17] For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. (ESV)

Communion:

Hebrews 10:11-14 – [11] And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. [12] But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, [13] waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. [14] For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. (ESV)

Isaiah 53:3-7 – (Isaiah 1-35 – Judgement.  40-66 – Salvation)  Suffering Servant Passage

[3] He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

[4] Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.

[5] But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.

[6] All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

[7] He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth. (ESV)

After Communion – Conclusion:

John 14:1-6 – [1] “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. [2] In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? [3] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. [4] And you know the way to where I am going.” [5] Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” [6] Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (ESV)

The what now – applying the Word to our life:

  1. True saving faith comes only through the person and work of Jesus Christ. This has been God’s plan of redemption from the very beginning.

  1. One must believe on the person and trust in the work of the Lord Jesus Christ for forgiveness of sin and the giving of a new life. (His life, death, burial, and resurrection)

  1. This belief is not just in the historical facts alone, but in Jesus as our personal Savior and Lord. (Our Mind and Our Heart are one)

  1. Jesus always has been and always will be the answer to all the questions of life. The real, biblical, and saving Jesus.

Invitation:

  1. Holiness – God is Holy
  2. Sinfulness – I am a sinner
  3. Forgiveness – Jesus Christ alone is the price paid for my sin. By His grace and mercy we have a redeemer.
  4. Newness – Through repentance and faith I become a new creation in Christ. Christ becomes my Savior and Lord.
