Luke 9:10-17 – “You give them something to eat”

My sermon notes for Sunday morning, Sept 3rd.  Remember, these are my personal study notes and not a manuscript of the sermon. They are provided as an outline each week for our Tabernacle Church family. The church provides a live stream of the service each Sunday at 10:30 on Facebook. We also provide the services through YouTube by Sunday afternoon.  You can find Sermon Notes, Family Devotional Guides, Prayer List, and other resources at our Church Website.

Luke 9:10-17

INTRO

  • Feeding the 5,000
  • In all four gospels
  • How soon the disciples forgot what they were capable of

THE DISCIPLES

  • Just off a spiritual high (short term mission trip)
  • Preaching and Healing

They lost their focus

  • Send the crowd away
  • Thet needed to see the big picture  (Kingdom Focus)
  • The crowd needed to hear and receive (just like those they had previously impacted)

They have forgotten whom they serve/follow

  • The forgot who Jesus was
  • We have no more than 5 loaves and 2 fish
  • They had already witnessed miracles… What changed?
  • If Jesus is asking… surely it will be done.

JESUS

  • He took them and withdrew
  • To strengthen, encourage, and TEACH

Showing compassion for the crowd

  • Welcomed them
  • Spoke the Kingdom to them
  • Cured them

What a great example for us

  • Love others
  • Share the Gospel
  • Serve them… with spiritual intent (messy work)

Teaching the disciples

  • Test of faith… You go do
  • I have given you the authority and power!
  • He knew the task was impossible for them

Acknowledging the Giver of all things

  • Bless this food
  • A picture of dependance and devotion
  • The Father, Son and Holy Spirit

Lessons to Learn

  • The key to the Christian life is trusting in the Lord Proverbs 3:5-6
    • And keep trusting….lifelong trusting
  • We are weak but He is strong 2 Corinthians 12:9
  • God is our provider
    • The Goal is the Spread of His Glory.
    • NOT OUR BLESSING (not stuff we get)
    • Finding our content me in life with Him
  • We have the privilege of joining God in His work
    • It is a supernatural (Spirit-filled) work
  • The Physical is temporary, but the spiritual is eternal
    • John 6:35-51
