Luke 6:12-16 – “Appointed, Anointed, and Sent”

Luke 6:12–16

INTRO

  • From controversy to teaching
  • Tucked in between is the calling of the Apostles
  • Why?  God is establishing His Kingdom Plan
  • Appointed, Sent, With a message.  With His authority
  • This is a great word for us today.  We have the same mission
  • Perfect timing considering our weekend! DLIFE

The Importance of Prayer – v. 12

Jesus Praying

  • Luke 4:42
  • Luke 5:16

In these days

  • He knew His journey (to the cross)

All night He continued

  • Privately
  • Passionately
  • Dependently

Called, Appointed and Sent – v. 13a

Disciples

  • Saved person learning to live under the Lordship of Jesus Christ
  • Listen, Learn, Invest, Influence, and Impact
    • We have the listening and learning down… how about going and living?

Called and Sent

  • Called out.  From… To
  • Personal

Luke 5:1-11, Matthew 4:18-25

  • Immediately, Purposefully

With Divine Authority – v. 13b

Apostles – one sent with authority

  • They could never fail because God called sent

Revelation 21:14 – The Apostles name upon the foundation of the city.

  • 12 Tribes – 12 Apostles

Utilizing Ordinary People – vv. 14-16

Not highly educated, not politically connected, nothing special… willing to FOLLOW JESUS

  • Fishermen, Tax Collector, Zealot

What set them apart:

  • Faithfulness, Willingness, Obedience

Their message

  • The Gospel, The Good News of the Kingdom
  • The Words of God

Their authority

  • God’s appointment
  • Ephesians 2:20 – Build upon their foundation.

The Go and Do

  • We do not have a need for Apostles (because we have the Word), but we still have the Great Commission to fulfill. Matthew 28:18-20
  • We have been appointed, anointed, and sent
  • Are we true followers of Christ? A follower is moving after. We are in the process of something… FOLLOWING JESUS
  • Are we engaged in the mission… or are we just listening to the message?

Matthew 28:16-20 – “Go Therefore and Make Disciples”

INTRO

  • For us… Resurrection Sunday was last week…now what?
  • Matthew opens with the birth… then the resurrection, but that is not the end
  • Jesus has been preparing the disciples all through the Gospels for this very moment.
    • He lived
    • He died
    • He rose again
    • He gives the GREAT COMMISSION

His Invitation vv. 16-17

  • Go to Galilee… and you will see me. v. 10
  • The risen Savior is giving His parting words to His disciples
  • It has been 40 days since His resurrection
  • Some worshiped (Understood exactly who He was)
  • Some doubted (believed but a little hesitant)

His Authority – v. 18

  • All authority
  • From humiliation to exaltation Phil 2:1-11
  • In the Gospels he healed, raised the dead, walked on water…. This was just a glimpse of who He is.

His Mandate – vv. 19-20a

Make Disciples (the imperative)

  • A saved person learning to live under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
  • Notice what the imperative is not
    • Not preaching
    • Not making converts
    • Not getting decisions
  • Matt 4:19 – Fisher of men
  • Matt 28:19 – Discipler of all men (all nations)
  • Consider the “callings”… to preach, teach or evangelize
  • Yet, we are all called to make disciples.

How is disciple making accomplished?

By Going – v. 19

  • Going, As you are going
  • AS YOU ARE GOING – FOLLOWING JESUS

By Baptizing – v.19

  • Identifying with Christ and His Church
  • Picture of the changed life… from old to new
  • A physical and public statement of one’s faith
  • Scripture gives no indication there such thing as an unbaptized believer
  • Notice, it is after one professes their faith in Christ

By Teaching – v. 19

  • To observe
    • Belief, Trust, Action =Obedience
  • All I have commanded you
    • The words of Christ (the Word of God)
    • The words of the Apostles (The Word of God)
    • The Bible (The Word of God)

His Presence – v. 20b

  • I am with you always
  • Matt. 1:23 – Immanuel – GOD WITH US
  • The power of the mission
    • WE ARE NEVER ALONE
    • IT IS NOT OUR MESSAGE OR MISSION
    • WE SERVE HIM
    • WE ARE HIS AMBASSADOR

CONCLUSION

We have the mission

  • We have the power – All authority
  • We have the location – All the nations
  • We have the message – All the Words
  • We have the duration – All our days (end of the age)
