1 Corinthians 15:29-34 – If the Dead are not Raised

INTRO

  • The importance, power, and significance of the resurrection
  • Christ’s resurrection – vv. 12-28
  • Then comes the end – v. 24
  • The resurrection of the believer – vv. 29-58
  • Before he goes into details of what the resurrection body looks like, Paul covers more of the implications of denying the resurrection. vv. 29-34

If there is no resurrection, then why even consider the Gospel – v. 29

  • Baptisms mean nothing if there is not resurrection
  • Baptized on behalf of the dead
  • They – not a command, but an observation.  Pointing it out.
  • Not sure what Paul is addressing.  We know what Scripture teaches on how one is saved, so we know it has nothing to do with “dead” people receiving the benefit of someone else’s baptism (Mormonism)
  • THE RESURRECTION GIVES US HOPE

If there is no resurrection, then why endure the hardships of this life – vv. 30-32

  • We endure suffering because our home is not here.
  • Why are we in danger every hour? 
  • I die everyday!
  • Gal. 2:20
  • Luke 9:23
  • Phil. 1:21
  • Living sacrificially for Christ rather than the world.
  • We endure because this is not our home.
  • THE RESURRECTION INSPIRES US TO GO AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE.  SACRIFICIAL LIVING

If there is no resurrection, then why strive to live differently – vv. 33-34

  • No reason to live a holy life
  • Live like you believe in the resurrection
  • We become who we “fellowship with” (deep relationships)
  • Living a holy life… BE DIFFERENT
  • The Now and the Not yet.
    • Strive for holiness now… Be holy for eternity
  • THE RESURRECTION SHOULD MOTIVATE US TO LIVE A HOLY LIFE

CONCLUSION

1 John 3:1–3 [1] See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. [2] Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. [3] And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. (ESV)

Romans 8:12–17 – [12] So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. [13] For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. [14] For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. [15] For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” [16] The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, [17] and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. 1 Corinthians 15:12-28 -The Power of Christ’s Resurrection

INTRO

  • The importance of Christ’s resurrection
  • Apparently, some were doubting the resurrection of the dead
  • The IMPORTANCE and POWER of the resurrection
  • No resurrection… Not power in the Gospel

The resurrection of Christ is the grounds of our salvation – vv. 12-19

If Christ has not been raised:

  • The gospel is useless – v. 14
  • The apostles are false witnesses – v. 15
  • Our faith is futile, and we are still living in sin – vv.16-17
  • Those that have passed in Christ have perished – v. 18
  • Believers should be pitied, because our belief is in nothing. – v. 19

The resurrection of Christ is the pattern for our resurrection – vv. 20-23

  • BUT IN FACT… Christ has risen – v. 20a
  • First fruits of our resurrection – v. 20b-22
    • Festival of First Fruits – Ex. 23:16First phase of the harvest… the rest is comingIn Adam ALL dieIn Christ ALL believers will live
    • Romans 5:12-19
  • We are alive now, but not yet complete – v. 23
    • An order to things
    • His resurrection and His coming

The resurrection of Christ is the means of our ultimate triumph over evil – vv. 24-28

  • Then comes the END
  • When Christ returns all opposition is defeated – vv. 24-25
    • Conquering King… Triumphal procession
  • Death will be destroyed – v. 26
  • He has put all things under His feet – v. 27
    • Psalm 8:6

AT HIS COMING

  • People will be raised
  • All opposition is abolished
  • The Kingdom will be delivered up to the Father
