Colossians 1:24-29 -Every Believers Ministry of the Word

Colossians 1:25-29

Introduction:

  • God has designed the growth of His people to happen through the ministry of His Word. Not just information, but transformation
    • Hear, Believe, Trust, Do…live it out.
    • Believe, Obey, Share
  • There are two main expressions:
    • Public Ministry of the Word – the preaching and teaching of Scripture to the gathered church (Acts 2:42; 1 Timothy 4:13).
    • Personal Ministry of the Word – believers speaking the truth in love to one another (Colossians 3:16; Ephesians 4:15).
  • Both are essential: the preacher proclaims truth broadly, but the body applies it personally.
  • The danger is to think the ministry of the Word belongs only to pastors. Paul shows us it belongs to every believer.
  • If you think about it, most of our Church ministries are established under the structure of personal ministry.
  • We have in the text am great pattern to follow as we consider our role in the personal ministry of the word.

We serve Christ- v. 24-25

  • His suffering had a purpose… FOR THE CHURCH
  • I became a minister– servant, one who carries out another’s mission.
  • Stewardship – entrusted management, not ownership.
  • From God. For you. Make the Word fully known Given…for others…TO MAKE WORD FULLY KNOWN
  • WE SERVE CHRIST AND HE has given and entrusted believers with the ministry of the word.

We Proclaim His Word- vv. 26–28

  • The mysterynow revealed The New Covenant. The Gospel.
  • Christ in you the hope of glory.
    • IN YOU. HOPE. GLORY
    • Union with Christ. Confident expectation. The fullness of God’s presence, beauty, and perfection.
  • This is what we make known… when we minister the Word
  • Him we proclaim – authoritative announcement of JESUS
    • Warning – admonish, counsel, put truth on the mind
    • Teaching – instruct, explain, and apply truth.
  • It is both CORRECTIVE…addressing sin. And CONSTRUCTIVE…Building up in truth
  • WITH ALL WISDOM – apply knowledge rightly. NOT BEING RIGHT, helping people get right. Discernment.
  • LISTEN, CARE, GUIDE
  • Present everyone mature – complete, fully developed.
  • The goal is not just comfort but conformity to Christ. CHRISTLIKENESS

We Rely on His Strength –  29

  • Toil – labor to the point of exhaustion.
  • Struggle – contend, wrestle, agonize.
  • His energy/powerfully/within me – The same Spirit in Paul is the same Spirit of God within us.
  • It is work.. hard work, BUT IT IS HIS WORK.

The What Now

  • The public ministry of the Word—faithful preaching and teaching—is absolutely vital. But it is meant to flow into the personal ministry of the Word, believers encouraging and equipping others with the Word.
  • The church will not grow by sermons alone, but by sermons plus personal, Word-centered conversations in homes, small groups, hospital rooms, locker rooms, and everyday life.
  • Christ is enough, His Word is enough, and His Spirit is enough. So let’s serve Christ by serving one another with His Word, until we are all mature in Him.

  • PURCHASED BY CHRIST
  • Humility, honor, gratitude

Apostle

  • SENT BY CHRIST
  • Delegate, messenger, ambassador
  • Authority and purpose
  • Dignity and significance

Peter’s Congregation

The redeemed in Christ. To the churches in Asia Minor. Modern day Turkey)

  • To those who have obtained.
    • The redeemed in Christ. The converted. Born again.
  • Obtained. A gift from God. Given by the will of God
    • Consider his testimony. Faith, doubt, rejection, forgiveness, restoration, mission
  • A faith of equal value. No hierarchy in the Christ faith. We are adopted into the household of faith.
    • Different gifts and ministries, but one faith.
  • By the righteousness of God and Savior Jesus Christ
  • righteousness. The state of being just or morally pure, whether in one’s own strength or on the basis of imputed virtue.[1]
    • The imputed righteousness of Christ. A theological concept in Christian doctrine where the righteousness of Christ is attributed to believers, making them justified before God despite their own sinfulness (LOGOS FACTBOOK)

Peter’s Prayer

Their sanctification. For spiritual growth and maturity.

  • Grace and peace multiplied In abundance
  • The Gift of His Grace and Peace
  • Our continuing knowledge of His work of grace in our life brings peace.
  • Spiritual maturity. Remaining faithful. Exposing false teachers. Awaiting His return.

Luke 17:1-10

Intro

  • Jesus turns His teaching to the Disciples.
  • Teaching on Discipleship
  • Sin, Faith, and Service

Sin – vv. 1-4

Temptation

  • Temptation is not sin, but the desire that leads to sin
  • A stumbling block, causes to fall
  • 1 Corinthians 10:12-13

TEMPTATION The devil tempts people to sin. But temptation comes from within us as well (James 1:13–15). The way to deal with temptation is to do exactly what Jesus did when He was tempted (Matthew 4:1–11). He countered every temptation with Scripture. That means that counselees—as well as all Christians—must learn a good bit of Scripture to deal adequately with temptation. Jesus did not say, “Well, let Me look up a passage or two” before He responded to the evil one. Like Joshua was told to do (Joshua 1:8), Jesus had Scripture ready at hand to use..

Woe to those that cause others to stumble

  • Our life matters… our actions and words matter.
  • Our freedoms as a Christian need to be considered as we think about perception.
  • Setting a bad spiritual example (home, work…)
  • “These little ones”
    • Young believers. Babes in Christ

Dealing with sin

  • In our life…PAY ATTENTION
  • In the life of other believers.
    • Do I have the right to address them (A brother in Christ)
    • Do I love them enough to care
  • Rebuke – point out for the purpose of change
    • Stern warning
    • “Not to be right” or embarrass, but to help
    • Social media is not the biblical approach
  • Repent – sorrow, turning, moving on.
  • Forgive – Rebuke and Forgive…both

Galatians 6:1

Matthew 18:15-20

Ephesians 4:15,32

The strong position against sin set forth in the previous point must be balanced by a gracious, forgiving attitude toward sinners. Humble believers do not give offense, but neither do they take offense. They avoid sinning against others, but they also do not hold a grudge when others sin against them (cf. Luke 11:4).[1]

Faith – vv. 5-6

Increase our faith

  • In light of living in the reality of sin.
  • The difficulty of forgiving others.
  • REAL FAITH IS NEEDED TO LIVE IN THIS WORLD

Faith like a mustard seed

  • Small yet alive
  • Growing

Faith is trusting in HIM…Not believing in us.

  • HE IS STILL ON HIS THRONE
  • He is sending out in HIS NAME

Service – vv. 7-10

As we flee from sin… grow in our faith…  must continue to serve!

Jesus came to serve, not be served. (Mark 10:45)

We must remain faithful to what God is calling us to do.

  • We serve Christ, therefor others)…it is who we are!
  • We are called to serve, not be served

WE SERVE NOT TO RECEIVE

  • Reward or Recognition

WE DO NOT SERVE OUT OF MERE DUTY

  • We serve because we ARE HIS (we get too)

WE SERVE AS AN ACT OF WORSHIP AND JOY

  • The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Trinity, sharing in the one divine nature.
  • He is a divine person, not a power, force, or influence.

  • Now, Jesus is sharing the cost of believing it and living this life out (totally and faithfully)

1 Corinthians 4:14–21 - [14] I do not write these things to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. [15] For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. [16] I urge you, then, be imitators of me. [17] That is why I sent you Timothy, my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, to remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach them everywhere in every church.   • A true servant of Christ follows spiritual leaders that follow Christ
  • A true servant of Christ is leading others to follow Christ
  • A great dynamic of the Christian life is the idea of “leading and following”
  • The Barnabas – Paul – Timothy model
  • I am allowing someone to invest in my life as I invest in others.
  • This is a great picture of the CHURCH
  • 4 Generations…2 Timothy 2:1–2You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also. (ESV)
  • Let us learn this morning the dynamics of this Leading and Following Life

CONSIDER OTHERS – vv. 14-15

It is an attitude and a mindset

  • LOVE AND CONCERN
  • WE MUST CARE ABOUT THE SPIRITUAL WELL BEING OF OTHERS

A love for the church

  • Beloved agapao – the strongest form of love
  • A genuine love & care for another within the body of Christ

As Paul truly loved the church at Corinth. We too should have the same love for the meaning, purpose and gathering of the Lord’s Church.

A love for the people within the Church

  • Beloved Children – A fatherly love for the people of Corinth
  • We are part of a family. ONCE WE ARE BORN AGAIN. WE ARE BORN INTO A FAMILY/COMMUNITY OF FAITH
  • Countless Guides – a leader, teacher. Someone responsible for watching over a young child.
  • Paul understood the nurturing role of people within the church

A love for maturing in the faith

Maturing in the faith = Growing and changing into the likeness of Christ.

  • Admonish – to instruct, teach, and warn.
  • To see that which is wrong become right
    • To realize the wrong/sin
    • Turn from it
    • Move in a different direction
    • GROWING AND CHANGING
    • PUT OFF AND PUT ON – Colossians 3:1–17
  • Motivated by love and concern (AN IMPORTANT KEY TO REMEMBER)

CONSIDER OURSELVES – vv. 16-17

Our character

  • Imitators of me.  My ways in Christ
  • Our actions
  • 1 Timothy 4:12 Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. (ESV)

Our doctrine

  • Teach them in every church
  • Good sound teaching. Biblical truth
  • Transforming the mind. Rom. 12:1-2

CONSIDER GOD’S DESIRE FOR HIS PEOPLE – vv. 18-21

Following the theme of spiritual father. Paul is reminding them of their current state (divided, factions in the church)

I AM COMING TO YOU SOON! (a stern warning)

Just like earthly parents. Our spiritual relationships have similarities.

  • Hard work
  • Can be messy
  • Commitment and determination are key

YET… He loved them, Lived as an example before them. SO THAT they could grow and mature as spiritual children.

  • Grow up/Transformed…Holy and pleasing to the Lord (Rom. 12:1-2)

Paul took this commitment very seriously…WHY?

Because it is God’s Kingdom Plan

  • v. 20 – For the Kingdom does not consist of words but power.
  • There words will mean nothing apart from the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • The power of God is that which works to bring about NEW LIFE
  • WE CAN TRUST GOD TO DO WHAT HE SAYS ONLY HE CAN DO

It is what we are called to do

  • We are a spiritual family.
    • Takes Discipline… the rod – Matthew 18:15-18
    • Spirit of gentleness

Proverbs 3:11-12 – [11] My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, [12] for the LORD reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights. (ESV)

1 Thessalonians 5:14 – And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.


Scripture

Col. 3:1-17 – [1] If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. [2] Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. [3] For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. [4] When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

[5] Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. [6] On account of these the wrath of God is coming. [7] In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. [8] But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. [9] Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices [10] and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. [12] Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, [13] bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. [14] And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. [15] And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. [16] Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Romans 12:1–2 – [1] I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. [2] Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (ESV)

Matthew 18:15–18 – [15] “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. [16] But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. [17] If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. [18] Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven

1 Corinthians 3:10-17 – “Christ Our Only Foundation”

1 Corinthians 3:10-17

Intro Thoughts

  • The church in Corinth has division within them.
  • They were living as “carnal Christians.” Christians living in the flesh rather than the Spirit.
  • Remember… the church is made up of people, so therefore the people of the church have lost their focus and direction.
  • For us today… How can we apply this text?
  • Living as true servants as Christ and not as carnal Christians.  3:1-9
  • Building our life on the true foundation…The Gospel of Jesus Christ
  • It is a New Year so how about a New You

Check Your Heart – v. 10

We need to pay close attention to our spiritual life.

  • Examine yourself – 1 Cor 13:5
  • Test every spirit – 1 John 1:4

Take Care how WE BUILD upon the Gospel

Have WE (I) trusted in the finished work of Christ?

Are we BUILDING (growing) in our faith?

  • Daily changing and maturing into the likeness of Christ

Trust in the Gospel – v. 11

No one lay a foundation other than…Jesus Christ

There is no quick fix, no easy way out. No new way

Our present reality our future life. Our marriage, Our finances, Our health. Our families. Our Church

We keep looking for the answers in all the wrong places. The only hope is Christ.

Invest in the Holy – vv. 12-15

Our goals, ambitions and desires of life indicate our heart

  • Holy and of the Lord
  • Unholy and of the World

The fruits of our life will be made known

  • Precious or Perishing

We should desire to stop living in the “fringe” areas and live IN THE HOLY!

  • DARE TO BE DIFFERENT!!!!

Remember who we are – vv. 16-17

We are God’s Temple and God resides within us

  • Set apart.
  • Privileged to enter into His presence
  • Individually and corporately.
  • Our relationship is personal, yet we are part of a family

We should be different, because God is different

  • 1 Peter 1:15-17 – but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am Holy.”

Scripture

1 Corinthians 3:10–17

[10] According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. [11] For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. [12] Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw—[13] each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. [14] If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. [15] If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.

[16] Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? [17] If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple. (ESV)
