A couple of things to consider first:
They were loved
My Beloved – v. 14
- Paul’s words are motivated by love and concern
- Love one another – John 13:34 – A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. (ESV)
- Love enough to care
- Love enough to receive
They were empowered
Sensible People – v. 15
- Practically wise. Doing based on our knowledge
- They were a young church, YET that had all they needed to live out a faithful life.
- I have no doubt you can do it!
- Spirit of God, Word of God, People of God
- 2 Peter 1:3–11
The Warning of Idolatry – v.14
Flee – v. 14
- Get way from… danger
- Flee, Flee, Flee
- Flee from Sin – 2 Cor. 6:14 – 7:1
- Flee from fornication – 1 Cor. 6:18 (1st letter and 2nd letter…. flee!)
Idolatry – v. 14
- Worshiping anything other than God
- We are called to worship God in a TRUE WAY
- VERY SERIOUS SIN
- Strikes at the heart of God and who He is
- We are saying that GOD IS NOT ENOUGH
- We make God into another image (into the image of our heart and desires)
- Romans 1:20–23
- More than just objects alone
- Philosophies of life, Passion of life, Culture
- Anything that has our primary concern and loyalty
- Job, hobbies, future, family, and etc.
Exodus 34:14
It is not THE THING, but rather THE HEART OF OUR DESIRES for THE THING
