2 Timothy 2:8–13
Our Focus for Faithfulness
v. 8 – Jesus
Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel
remember
- imperative, command. (continue to remember)
Jesus
Risen from the dead
- Power, conquering Kin
Offspring of David
- Humanity
- High Priest
1 Peter 2:20–22 – [20] For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. [21] For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. [22] He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. (ESV)
Hebrews 12:1–2 – [1] Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, [2] looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. (ESV)
v. 9 – The Word
for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound!
Suffering
- For being faithful
Bound with chains
- Physical
- Persecution
2 Corinthians 12:10 – For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (ESV)
In the midst of all that he was enduring…
Notice what he found his confidence in.
- THE WORD. THE GOSPEL. GOD’S TRUTH
Eph. 6:17
- The Offensive weapon
Heb. 4:12-13 – [12] For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. [13] And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account. (ESV)
v. 10 – Our Purpose
Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
For the Sake of the elect
- Those who will believe
2 Peter 3:9–10 – [9] The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. [10] But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. (ESV)
The purpose of redemption!!!!
vv. 11-13 – Eternal Blessing
[11] The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; [12] if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; [13] if we are faithless, he remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself. (ESV)
Die with Him – We live with Him
- Crucified with Christ. Die to sin
Endure – We will reign
- Persevere in the faith. Good soils
If we deny – He will deny
- Depart from me
If we are faithless – He remains faithful
- When the saved stumble He will forgive.
- When no saving faith professes– He will remain faithful to the Gospel. He cannot deny Himself
