Deuteronomy 1:1-5 – An Introduction
Deuteronomy 1:1–5 – [1] These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab. [2] It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea. [3] In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the people of Israel according to all that the LORD had given him in commandment to them, [4] after he had defeated Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth and in Edrei. [5] Beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses undertook to explain this law, saying, (ESV)
The Text:
The Words that Moses Spoke – v. 1
Moses spoke to the people of Israel according to all the LORD had given him in commandments to them – v. 3
Moses undertook to explain this law, saying – v. 5
Moses is about to speak the Word of the Lord to a new generation as they follow after God’s plan as His chosen people.
- To Live as His Chosen People and Enter the Promise Land
Then just as today
- God’s Word for God’s People as they live out God’s promises and Experience God’s Blessings or God’s Judgement.

Pentateuch – The first five books of the Bible
- Genesis
- Creation, Fall, and the beginning of God’s plan of redemption through Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Israel).
- Closes with Jacob and his people living in Egypt.
- Exodus
- Opens with a quick summary of the 400 years in Egypt (turned into captivity)
- We are introduced to Moses. His birth, life, and ministry.
- The deliverance of Israel from captivity in Egypt.
- Closes with the giving of the Law at Mt. Sinai
- Leviticus
- Detailed instruction for the people of Israel.
- Pointing out their sin and the need for atonement.
- Numbers
- Continued instruction
- Chp. 13/14 – failure to enter the promise land.
- Wandering for 40 years in Kadesh.
- Deuteronomy
- Moses giving the law to the new generation (in 3 messages)

Words to Understand
- Old Covenant – God’s promise to Abraham to make him the father of a great people. A set apart and chosen people. Upon their obedience and trust, then God would guide, protect, bless, and prosper them. Gen. 12, 15, 17
- So that His Glory may be known. THROUGH HIS PEOPLE. As they love, worship, and follow after HIM!!!!
- Law – (the terms of the Covenant)
- Moral – 10 Commandments
- Civil
- Ceremonial
- Means of knowing God’s will for their life. (Obedience=Blessing)
- Land
- The blessings God’s provision for His covenant people.
- A picture of His Grace – Out of Captivity into a promised land.
- The promise was first made to Abraham (Genesis 15:18-21), then confirmed to his son Isaac (Genesis 26:3), and then to Isaac’s son Jacob (Genesis 28:13). The Promised Land was described in terms of the territory from the River of Egypt to the Euphrates river (Exodus 23:31).
- Their faithfulness to acknowledge, love, and worship God alone would be manifested by a prosperous land.
A Big Picture Overview
- Moses is calling the people to trust in the Lord and remain obedient to Words giving at Mt. Sinai.
- They are reminded of God’s faithfulness and mercy as the new generation prepares to enter the promise land.
- They are being encouraged to trust and obey as they conquer the land.
- It is a beautiful picture of God’s continuous grace as his people fall short of His glory and perfection.
The New Covenant
- God’s promises ultimately fulfilled in and through Jesus Christ.
- Change in the sacrifice, priesthood, promises.
- John 1:16-17
