Deuteronomy 4:9-43 “Living in the Land” part 2

My sermon notes for Sunday morning, Aug. 23rd as we walk through the book of Deuteronomy. Remember, these are my personal study notes and not a manuscript of the sermon.  They are provided to help you follow the sermon as you listen each week. The church provides a live stream of the service each Sunday at 10:45 on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/firstbaptistavonpark/  We also provide the services through our website by Sunday afternoon at www.fbcap.net

Deuteronomy 4:9-43

  • 4:1-43 is the conclusion of Moses’ first message.  He is preparing them for life in the land.
  • The physical journey will end, but the spiritual/relational journey is on-going.
  • God is calling His people to live as recipients of His covenant love demonstrated by a life that please their redeemer.

Over the next couple of weeks we will consider 4 truths we need to apply to our life as WE LIVE IN THE LAND as new covenant believers and followers of Jesus Christ.

Listen & Fear (vv. 1-8) – Remember & Worship (vv. 9-40)

Remember – vv. 9-14

Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children – v. 9

[13] And he declared to you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, that is, the Ten Commandments, and he wrote them on two tablets of stone. [14] And the LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and rules, that you might do them in the land that you are going over to possess – vv. 13-14

  • Keep
    • Your soul diligently (heart)
    • lest we forget
  • Make known – teach, share, LEGACY (Not just memory)
    • our own family (start there)
    • Church family – 2 Tim. 2:2
  • Continue to remember/learn
    • teach you statutes and rules, that you might do them in
    • Written out.  Never forget
AT HOREB – Who He is

Exodus 20 – Ten Commandments (Here a reminder of the 1 & 2)

Worship – vv. – 15-43

“Therefore watch yourselves very carefully. Since you saw no form on the day that the LORD spoke to you at Horeb out of the midst of the fire, [16] beware lest you act corruptly by making a carved image for yourselves – v. 15-16

And beware lest you raise your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of heaven, you be drawn away and bow down to them and serve them, things that the LORD your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven – v. 19

GOD IS TRANSCENDENT – Superior, Beyond the normal.

  • He is eternal
  • All powerful, All knowing, Ever Present
  • Do not worship things. Objects

GOD IS IMMANENT – Involved with His creation.

  • He reveals Himself.
  • We HEAR from His Word and Believe.
  • The Spirit quickens our heart.
    • We put our trust in no other CREATED THINGS

Perfect in His love

Infinite in His Wisdom

Complete in His Sovereignty

Romans 1:18-23 – Suppress the truth…WHO GOD IS

AT EGYPT – What He did

But the LORD has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be a people of his own inheritance, as you are this day – v. 20

Furnace – purge, purify, prepare them for what God had called them to be.

He has (and will) chosen, guided, and delivered His people

  • Old – Nation of Israel
  • New – Believers/Church

AT KADESH – His expectations

Moses smote the rock

For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God – v. 24

Instead of speaking to the rock he hit the rock. (Numbers 20:1-13)

God provided the water for His people, but disciplined Moses

  • Evidently, Within his heart…he was glorifying in self rather than God.
    • Do not fret or over think…HE KNOWS OUR HEART
  • Jealous like a husband over his wife or mother over her children
  • Motivated by love.  He knows what is best and must discipline.

HIS COVENANTS – His Faithfulness and Love

[25] “When you father children and children’s children, and have grown old in the land, if you act corruptly by making a carved image in the form of anything, and by doing what is evil in the sight of the LORD your God, so as to provoke him to anger, [26] I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that you will soon utterly perish from the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess. You will not live long in it, but will be utterly destroyed – vv. 25-26

[29] But from there you will seek the LORD your God and you will find him, if you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul. [30] When you are in tribulation, and all these things come upon you in the latter days, you will return to the LORD your God and obey his voice. [31] For the LORD your God is a merciful God. He will not leave you or destroy you or forget the covenant with your fathers that he swore to them – vv. 29-31

  • IF YOU OBEY BLESSING
  • IF YOU DISOBEY CHASTISEMENT
  • WHEN YOU REPENT THEN FORGIVENESS AND RESTORATION

It is a picture into the future.  They will be conquered and taken by Assyria and Babylon.  They will return, yet not truly live out what God has called them to be….YET, through the GOSPEL….JESUS CHRIST….ALL THINGS ARE MADE NEW.

CONCLUSION

Listen, Fear, Remember, Worship

[35] To you it was shown, that you might know that the LORD is God; there is no other besides him. [36] Out of heaven he let you hear his voice, that he might discipline you. And on earth he let you see his great fire, and you heard his words out of the midst of the fire. [37] And because he loved your fathers and chose their offspring after them and brought you out of Egypt with his own presence, by his great power, [38] driving out before you nations greater and mightier than you, to bring you in, to give you their land for an inheritance, as it is this day, [39] know therefore today, and lay it to your heart, that the LORD is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other. [40] Therefore you shall keep his statutes and his commandments, which I command you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land that the LORD your God is giving you for all time.”
