Deut. 5:18 – You shall not commit adultery

The Commandment Stated

Why does it matter?

  • BECAUSE GOD IS HOLY
  • BECAUSE GOD’S DESIRE IS FOR HIS CREATION TO FIND THEIR SATISFACTION IN WHO THEY ARE IN HIM (OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM…OUR MOST IMPORTANT RELATIONSHIP)
  • BECAUSE OF GOD’S DESIRE FOR MARRIAGE (MAN & WOMAN…OUR MOST IMPORTANT RELATIONSHIP THIS SIDE OF HEAVEN)
God has a DIVINE PLAN FOR HIS CREATION

Gen. 2:18-24

  • God’s Divine Plan
  • Complementary. Perfectly fit together
  • One Man and One Woman

Malachi 2:13-16

  • A covenant
  • Coming together to fill the earth
This covenant relationship is made complete through Christ and the Gospel

Because of His GRACE – His power, presence and promises

Ephesians 5:22-25, 31-32

  • Linked the Old with the New
  • Marriage is a Picture of Christ and the Church

Husband – loves, leads, sacrifices, cherishes, nourishes

  • Is my Wife closer to the Lord because of me or in spite of me?

Wife – loves, respects, follows

  • Do I love what God has created me to be?
THE ROOT OF ADULTERY is THE HEART
Matt. 5:27-30 – Jesus preaching the Sermon on the Mount

You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. vv. 27-28

With Lustful Intent Epithumeo

  • Desire, covet, long for
  • When a glance becomes a stare.
  • 2 Sam. 11:1-4 – David and Bathsheba

From the Words of the Savior – OUR SIN IS A BASIC HEART ISSUE

BEHAVIOR = HEART

If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.vv.29-30

THE WHAT NOW

Do Not Commit Adultery

Do Not live with lustful intent

Be aware

  • Self-examination. Realize what you are capable of.
  • CALL SIN WHAT IT IS.
  • Realize that we live in a fallen world. WE ALL WILL BE TEMPTED.  WE ALL WILL SUFFER.  WE ALL LIVE IN SPIRITUAL WARFARE.
  • John 17:15-19 – Do not take me out of the world, but keep me from the evil one.

Be intentional

  • 1 Cor. 9:24-27 – Run as Paul.
  • Discipline, Effort
  • What we feed will grow!!!!!! CONSIDER WHAT WE WATCH, LISTEN TO, and PUT OURSELVES AROUND.

Be radical

  • Dare to be different.
  • Sacrifice.  DO WITHOUT SO THAT YOU MAY OBTAIN.
  • Put off – Put on

SCRIPTURE
Genesis 2:18–24 – [18] Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” [19] Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. [20] The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. [21] So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. [22] And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. [23] Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”[24] Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Malachi 2:13–16 – [13] And this second thing you do. You cover the LORD’s altar with tears, with weeping and groaning because he no longer regards the offering or accepts it with favor from your hand. [14] But you say, “Why does he not?” Because the LORD was witness between you and the wife of your youth, to whom you have been faithless, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant. [15] Did he not make them one, with a portion of the Spirit in their union? And what was the one God seeking? Godly offspring. So guard yourselves in your spirit, and let none of you be faithless to the wife of your youth. [16] “For the man who does not love his wife but divorces her, says the LORD, the God of Israel, covers his garment with violence, says the LORD of hosts. So guard yourselves in your spirit, and do not be faithless.” (ESV)

Ephesians 5:22–25 – [22] Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. [23] For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. [24] Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. [25] Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, (ESV)

Ephesians 5:31–32 – [31] “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” [32] This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. (ESV)

2 Samuel 11:1–5 – [1] In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem.

[2] It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful. [3] And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” [4] So David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned to her house. [5] And the woman conceived, and she sent and told David, “I am pregnant.” (ESV)

John 17:15–19 – [15] I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. [16] They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. [17] Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. [18] As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. [19] And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth. (ESV)

1 Corinthians 9:24–27 – [24] Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. [25] Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. [26] So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. [27] But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. (ESV)
