Deuteronomy 8:1-20 – Remember the Lord
Intro
Where we are in the text:
- Chap 6 – Teach the Law
- Chap 7 – Conquer the Land
- Chap 8 – Remember the Lord
A major component of this chapter is God’s care, guidance, and provision for them as they wandered in the wilderness (God disciplined the previous generation). He knew once this generation entered their new land of blessing could cause a LACK OF FOCUS. As we live in our land… how important is it for believers today to remember?
These Chapters may seem repetitive to us each week (remember, this was given as one speech to the people (4:44-11:32)
Be Careful – v. 1
To do the whole commandment
BIG PICTURE OF THIS SECTION. YOU be CAREFUL (Bookend of Chapter)
- Pay attention, take the time and effort. Take it seriously
- REAL HOPE…I get to live this way
- Joyful followship (obedience)
Commandment – All that God has told them. All that God has given to His people. SO THAT THEY KNOW HIM and FOLLOW AFTER HIM and LIVE FOR HIM.
So that you
- Live and multiply
- Go in and possess (blessings follow obedience)
HOW TO LIVE CAREFUL
- Remember what God has done
- Keep His Word
- Do not forget who He is and who you are
Remember the Whole Way– vv. 2-5
The Lord has led
What He has done for you
- For them it was the wilderness wandering
- What about us? Salvation/Sanctification
It made you who you are today
- Humbled
- Tested
A great lesson for God’s people today (the Church). God never going to leave His people. His Mission is Redemption….nothing else. REMEMBER THIS!!!!!!!! We lose hope when we focus on the wrong mission.
Keep His Commandments– vv. 6-10
BY Walking in His ways and by fearing Him
Continue to keep/walk/daily live out
- HE IS bringing you into the Land.
- Remember 7:6 … God’s special treasure/possession…He is using His people for a purpose (HIS GLORY)
KEY….TO bless the LORD your God for the good land he has given you. v. 10b (as we walk…we bless HIM)
Take Care to not forget – v. 11-18
The LORD your God (who He is)
By not keeping/believing/obeying
- His statues, commandments, rules
- WHICH I COMMANDED YOU
WHEN everything is going well
- We get happy…prosperous
- v. 14a – then in your heart you will forget
- our circumstances can and will effect our heart…if we FORGET
Lest you SAY IN YOUR HEART my power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth – v. 17
- How soon we forget?!?!
- IN THE HEART…SELF IS PUT ON the throne that God belongs.
- MY power, might, hand….GOT ME HERE
CONCLUSION – vv. 19-30 (bookend)
A warning/The reality of disobedience
If you forget…the Lord your God
Go after other nations
- Serve and worship
- What we do indicates whom we worship
You will perish – Like other nations
- God is fair
- God is just
Because…..They did not obey the voice of God – v. 20b
