Luke 9:18-22 – “Who do you say that I am?”

Luke 9:18-22

INTRO

  • Jesus is finishing His Galilean ministry
  • He is now on His journey to Jerusalem
  • His journey to the cross
  • He asks a very important question.
  • A question that needs to be answered.

THE CROWD

They had an opinion

  • John the Baptist, Elijah, a Prophet Malachi 4:5
  • Good man that has done good things.

The believed in the person of Jesus

  • They were religious people.
  • They followed Him.
  • They were looking for the Messiah
  • The moment the cross was in sight, they turned.
  • We cannot separate his suffering, death, and resurrection form His messiahship.
  • If we remove the WHY OF HIS DEATH… OUR SINFULNESS
  • Then we also turn Jesus into the WRONG JESUS

They were looking for healer and deliverer (From Roman rule)

  • Today… Looking for a BLESSING GIVER.  HEALER, PROVIDER
  • While true, Jesus is SO MUCH MORE

WE MUST GET JESUS RIGHT!

THE DISCIPLES

They had a conviction

  • “The Christ of God”
  • The anointed one. The Coming King Psalm 2:2
  • Gabriel – Luke 1:32-33
  • Zachariah – Luke 1:68-69
  • Shepherds – Luke 2:10-11
  • John the Baptist – Luke 3:16-18

Christ: Matthew 1:1, 18; 2:4; 11:2; 16:20; 23:8; 26:68; 27:22—lit. “the Anointed One.” Many people speak of Jesus Christ without realizing that the title Christ is actually a confession of faith. Messiah, the Hebrew equivalent for Christ, refers in the Old Testament to prophets (1 Kin. 19:16), priests (Lev. 4:5, 16), and kings (1 Sam. 24:6, 10), in the sense that all of them were anointed with oil. This anointing symbolized a consecration for ministry by God. Jesus Christ, as the Anointed One, would be the ultimate Prophet, Priest, and King (Is. 61:1; John 3:34). With his dramatic confession, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (16:16), Peter declares his faith in Jesus as the promised Messiah

Tell no one

  • The were looking for a cross less Messiah
  • The time was not NOW
  • He MUST first suffer on the cross

Isaiah 53:4-10

Truths to Consider

  • Salvation comes only through the person and work of Jesus Christ. This has been God’s plan of redemption from the very beginning.
  • One must believe on the person and trust in the work of the Lord Jesus Christ for forgiveness of sin. (His life, death, burial, and resurrection… applied and received into my life)
  • This belief is not just in the historical facts alone, but also trusting in Jesus as our personal Savior and Lord. (Our Mind and Our Heart are one)
  • True conversion will always lead to a changed life. (Come and follow me… we either follower Him or not)
  • Jesus always has been and always will be the answer to all the questions of life. The real, biblical, and saving Jesus.
