Our Living Hope

“Biblical hope is not an uncertain desire. It is a confident expectation.”  John Piper

“Hope is to want something to happen or be true and think that it could happen or be true” – Merriam‑Webster

I like the biblical definition of hope rather than the worlds definition of hope. The sad reality is that too often we forget about God’s view of hope and live our day to day life in the worlds understanding of hope. We tend to live our life wanting our life to make a difference, rather than expecting it.

It is very important as believers that we remember that we have been born again to a LIVING HOPE.  We KNOW how things are going to work out because we KNOW what we have in the Gospel of the Lord Jesus.  1 Peter teaches us these great truths.

1 Peter 1:1-5

Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,

To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood:

May grace and peace be multiplied to you.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

We have a living hope because:

We are special – the elect

  • Chosen before the foundation of the world

We are just passing through – exiles

  • Our home is not here

We are alive in Christ – born again

  • His resurrection is our power to live the Christian life

We will endure to the end – an inheritance kept in heaven

  • A hope that is imperishable, unfading, and secure in the arms of God.
