My sermon notes for Sunday morning, July 30th.  Remember, these are my personal study notes and not a manuscript of the sermon. They are provided as an outline each week for our Tabernacle Church family. The church provides a live stream of the service each Sunday at 10:30 on Facebook. We also provide the services through YouTube by Sunday afternoon.  You can find Sermon Notes, Family Devotional Guides, Prayer List, and other resources at our Church Website.

Luke 8:16-21

INTRO

  • Luke 8:15 – As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience.
  • Hearing the Word not with just our ears, but also with our heart.
  • HEARING AND DOING THE WORD
  • OBEY/ DO = new nature produces a new person
  • Not a list of Dos and DONTs.  To obey is to follow, live differently…follow after Jesus.

Hear and Make Known – vv. 16-18

Receive and Respond to the Word

  • Hear and Believe
  • Receive John 1:12

Display the Word

  • You do not cover a lamp.
  • We do not cover the Word
  • What is on the inside will/should come out
  • The truth of the Word on display

Hidden and manifest. Secret and made known

  • The truth of the Gospel (the called)
  • Our life (the real coming out)

Continue to hear

  • Our sanctification.
  • Time in the Word (Personal)
  • Time under the Word (Corporate)
  • So goes you… so goes you and the Word
    • Less or More

Hear and Live – vv. 19-21

  • Obviously, Jesus had great concern for and loved His family. But the most important was devotion to HIS FATHER Luke 2:49
  • His greatest concern is for the spiritual family

The Spiritual Family

Those that hear, receive, and LIVE OUT (OBEY, DO, FOLLOW AFTER)

An inward change.  Supernaturally from God

  • Walk in a manner worthy of the Lord – Colossians 1:9-12
  • Ambassadors for Christ – 2 Corinthians 5:17-21
  • His workmanship…good works – Ephesians 2:8-10

An outward focus and direction. Our responsibility to live it out

  • James 1:22-25 – Doers of the Word
  • Matthew 7:24 – Hears and acts
  • John 8:31 – Continue

Because there has been such an radical inward change

  • From death to life

There should be a radical change in how we live our life

  • Bearing Fruit Luke 8:15

John 20:19-23 – “I am Sending You”

John 20:19–23 - On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”

INTRO

  • Easter Sunday is so much more than an empty tomb
  • It is what that empty tomb accomplished
  • The resurrection is everything
  • Validates all that Jesus has said
  • He is the Messiah. He is God
  • From Old to New
  • Provides us our Power, Purpose and Hope 1 Cor. 15:1-58
  • We must listen to the Words of Jesus… HE IS SENDING YOU.
  • The Apostle John lays it out perfectly. (His life was a perfect example) HOW TO GO. HOW TO GO AND LIVE FOR JESUS.

Respond to the Gospel

John 5:24 – Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.

John 20:30–31 30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Believe

  • Trust in the ability of
  • Conversion (Head, Heart, Life)

Keep the Word

1 John 2:3-63 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: 6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.

  • Watch closely. Guarding a prisoner
  • Desire to please.  Obedience is based on understanding.
  • FOLLOW JESUS.  FOLLOW THE WORD.
  • LOVE, READ, MEDITATE
  • LIVING OUT THE GOSPEL!

Psalm 119:9 How can a young man keep his way pure?
By guarding it according to your word.

Psalm119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Love Others

1 John 3:16-18 – 16 By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 17 But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? 18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.

  • OTHERS, OTHERS, OTHERS,
  • His love toward us
  • Our love toward others
    • If we receive
    • We should give

Daily Walk in Fellowship with Him

1 John 5:13-1513 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.

Philippians 4:8-9

[8] Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. [9] What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. (ESV)

First things first:

  • What we think is what we become
  • Our thoughts shape our behavior…how we behave indicates how we think (and who we are)

GOD IS VERY CONCERNED ABOUT OUR MIND

A mind set upon the world (Values, decisions, and desires apart from the Holiness and truth of God) and self (flesh) is what leads to worry, anxiety, emptiness and lack of peace.

Ephesians 4:20-24 – But you have not so learned Christ, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.

2 Cor. 10:5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ

Romans 12:1-2 – I beseech you therefore brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.  And do not be conformed to the world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Our Mind – THINK ON THESE THINGS – v. 8

Whatever things are TRUE – real & genuine.

Whatever things are HONORABLE – worthy & respected

What ever things are JUST – right.

  • Doing right between God and man.

What ever things are PURE – morally clean & spotless

What ever things are LOVELY – pleasing, gracious.

  • Pleasing…lifting others up and not tearing down.

What ever things are of COMMENDABLE– reputable

If there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

Our Life – Practice these things – v. 9

What you have LEARNED

What you have RECEIVED

What you have HEARD

What you have SEEN

Practice these things

  • LIVE IT OUT

AND THE PEACE OF GOD WILL BE WITH YOU!
