What makes Biblical Counseling so unique/different?
(What is it and why is it so important.)
Heath Lambert (Theology of Biblical Counseling) – Counseling is a conversation where one party with questions, problems, and trouble seeks assistance from someone they believe has answers, solutions, and help.
It is based on the all-sufficient and infallible Scripture
2 Tim. 3:16-17 – EQUIPS for EVERY GOOD WORK
More than just telling them, it is showing them from GOD’S PERSPECTIVE.
The Word is how God communicates with us.
It relies on the Holy Spirit
1 Cor. 2:14 – The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God.
Rom 8:5-11 – Minds of the Spirit and minds of the flesh… The Spirit bears witness to our spirit.
Some people will change, and some people will not change. It is a work of the Spirit.
Techniques are not key THE SPIRIT IS.
Rom 15:13 – With the power of the Holy Spirit may abound with hope.
It is gentle and compassionate
Look at the life of Jesus. Did not waver on Truth but was a perfect picture of love.
Not condemning or judgmental. ONLY BY GOD’S GRACE WE ARE WHO WE ARE!!!!!!
1 Thess. 5:14 – Different situations… different response. (admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all)
Gal 6:1-2 – Restore in gentleness
It is not merely for the professionals
Rom 15:14 – able to instruct one another
We all give answers and help every day. SOME ARE JUST BAD AT IT.
Takes place within the context of the church
Acts 11:19-26 – for a whole year they meet with the church
The epistles are written to churches.
