1 John – The Test of Our Assurance of Salvation

My sermon notes for Sunday morning, June 16th.  Remember, these are my personal study notes and not a manuscript of the sermon. They are provided as an outline each week for our Tabernacle Church family. The church provides a live stream of the service each Sunday at 10:30 on Facebook. We also provide the services through YouTube by Sunday afternoon.  You can find Sermon Notes, Family Devotional Guides, Prayer List, and other resources at our Church Website.

INTRO

  • 1 John 5:13 – So that you may KNOW
  • 2 Corinthians 13:5 – Let us examine ourselves
  • Assurance in our salvation = Confidence in our salvation

There are tests we should consider as we think through the assurance of our salvation. God lays them out perfectly for us in the book of 1 John.

The Test of Right Doctrine (Theological Test)

1 John 2:23; 3:23; 4:2; 5:5; 5:10; 5:13

The Test of Right Living (Ethical Test)

1 John 2:3-6; 3:4-9

The Test of Right Loving (Moral Test)

1 John 2:8-11; 3:10-12; 3:18; 4:7-11

Do I know I have a personal relationship with God and am I daily experiencing the joy of my salvation and the fellowship with the saints? – 1:3-4

  • Fellowship – to share, to have in common.
  • Joy – gladness
  • Full – complete

Do I walk in the light and flee from darkness? – 1:5-10

  • Light – Truth, Holiness
    • Psalm 119:104
    • John 8:12
  • Darkness – Untruth, Unholy
    • 1 Thessalonians 5:4-7
  • Deceive – Cause to wander
  • Confess – agree with God. Denounce it.  Forsake it.

Do I love His Word and strive to live in obedience to it? – 2:3-6

  • Know – To realize who He is and to grasp His greatness and glory.
  • Keep – have our eyes fixed upon…guarding a prisoner.
  • Practice righteousness– to perform and accomplish
    • v. 29; 3:10a

Do I demonstrate my love of God by the way that I treat others? – 3:10b-15; 2:9-11

  • The world hates… the world loves.
  • If we cannot love within the body of Christ, then how can we love outside the body.
