Luke 5:27-32 – “When Jesus Calls””

Luke 5:27-32

INTRO

  • The impact of Jesus and the Gospel
  • Rejected in His hometown
  • Then he encounters the Demonic, Leper, Paralytic, TAX COLLECTOR
  • All were viewed in a negative light
  • All received God’s favor and grace
  • A wonderful picture of how the Gospel changes lives
  • A wonderful picture of the call to follow Jesus
  • Levi and Sinner.  Jesus the Savior…  A Changed life

Levi was just living life as normal

Levi –Matthew (Matthew 9:9)

  • Tax collector (hated, despised, low of the low)
  • His calling, his life.
  • Doing all he knew to do

Then came Jesus

Levi was in the midst of everyday life. We have no idea what he was thinking or his inner disposition. All we know is Jesus showed up. This is exactly what happened in our life. One minute we are lost and the next minute we hear…FOLLOW ME. IT WAS REAL AND PERSONAL.

Doctrine of election

Effectual call

The call to those that come. Matthew 22:14, Romans 8:30

Follow Me

Repentance and Faith

Life change was immediate

Toward Christ (His devotion and worship)

His acknowledgement and worship of the Lord

  • And leaving everything, he rose and followed him
  • LEFT (self) – FOLLOWED (Christ)
  • Prepared a great feast in his house
  • Notice the joy
  • Excitement
  • Acknowledging His Lordship (what He had done for him)
  • HE GAVE HIM HIS BEST.  THIS IS WORSHIP

As J.C. Ryle said, nothing can happen to a man which ought to be such an occasion of joy, as his conversion. It is a far more important event than being married, or coming of age, or being made a nobleman, or receiving a great fortune. It is the birth of an immortal soul! It is the rescue of a sinner from hell! It is a passage from death to life! It is being made a king and priest forevermore! It is being provided for, both in time and eternity! It is adoption into the noblest and richest of all families, the family of God!

Philip Graham Ryken, Luke, ed. Richard D. Phillips, Philip Graham Ryken, and Daniel M. Doriani, vol. 1, Reformed Expository Commentary (Phillipsburg, NJ: P&R Publishing, 2009), 230–231.

Toward Others (His burden and witness)

there was a large company of tax collectors and others

  • Utilizing his influence and network
  • Big crowd

Reclining

  • Probably indicates that they were listening to Jesus teach
  • Eager to LEARN MORE. GROWING!!!!!!
  • Levi is already living the D-LIFE.

Remember, the world is opposed to the mission of Jesus

PEOPLE NEED THE GOSPEL. They are lost and dead in their trespasses and sin.

Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?

  • Jesus’ association with those of the world
  • Having a heart for ministry.  OTHERS
  • Building, Sharing, Inviting, Bringing, Discipling
  • HELPING OTHERS FOLLOW JESUS
  • UTILIZING OUR GOD GIVEN GIFTS AND TALENTS TO HELP OTHERS BECOME FOLLOWERS OF JESUS

I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.

  • Righteous
    • They thought they were.  We need nothing.  All we need is within us.
  • Sinners
    • I need help.  Me nothing and Jesus everything.

INTRO

“The foundation of all true knowledge of God must be a clear mental apprehension of His perfections as revealed in Holy Scripture. An unknown God can neither be trusted, served, nor worshipped.”  A.W. Pink

Which one is it?

  • God is in control of nothing
  • God is in control of some things
  • God is in control of everything

God’s exercise of power over his creation is also called God’s sovereignty. God’s sovereignty is his exercise of rule (as “sovereign” or “king”) over his creation

Wayne Grudem, 259.

God’s Sovereignty speaks of:

  • His rule and reign
  • His authority

The extent of His sovereignty:

  • Nature – Psalm 135:5-7
  • The Nations – Proverbs 21:1
  • Birth, Life and Death – Psalm 139:13-14, Hebrews 9:27

1 Chronicles 29:10-12

  • Greatness, power, glory, victory, & majesty are His.
  • All that is in the heavens and the earth are His.
  • He is exalted overall.
  • Riches and honor come from Him.
  • He rules overall.
  • In His hand is power and might
  • In His hand it is to make great and give strength

Proverbs 21:1, Genesis 50:19-20

  • God is working behind the scenes
  • He is working to accomplish His purpose…GOD HAS A PLAN

Isaiah 55:6-11

  • We will never know God’s perfect will until after it happens

1 Thess.4:3

  • For this is the will of God, OUR SANCTIFICATION

John 10:1-30

  • God loves His sheep.
  • Jesus came to give life abundantly.
  • We will never perish.
  • No one will snatch us from His hand.

Truths to consider

  • God is in control and sovereign over all
  • We can never know His perfect will
  • Instead of asking WHY GOD? We should be asking WHAT DO I NEED TO LEARN GOD?
  • Focus on what we do know.  Focus on what God has revealed to us in His Word
  • Remember to spend our time on what we do control…OUR SANCTIFICATION.

Luke 4:31-44 – “The Authority of Jesus”

Holy One of God

  • James 2:19 – Demons shudder

Be silent and come out

  • Demonstrating His authority over the demon
  • You…HUSH
  • Now is not the time

And they were amazed at His Word

  • At His teaching, authority, and power

The news spreads

Through Healing the Masses – vv. 38-41

Simon’s house

  • More private and intimate

Rebuked the fever and she began to serve Him

  • Touched by Christ.  Completely. Wholly
  • Response…serve Him

Laid hands on every one of them and healed

  • Personal.  Face to Face

Demons crying out “You are the Son of God

  • Knew He was the Christ

Thoughts on Jesus’ healing ministry:

  • Pointing people to who He is (authority/power)
  • Pointing people to the new birth
    • Ultimate healing
    • From dead to alive.  NEW LIFE
  • Every disease
    • Not live the TV preachers that just heal certain types
    • Jesus heals ALL

Through Fulfilling His purpose – vv. 42-44

I must preach the Kingdom of God

  • Rule and reign of God
  • Demonic
  • Physical

Same today…

  • Satan is opposed to the WORD and the Work of the Kingdom
  • Yet, the Word has the power and authority
  • We are have  the same mission and the protection 1 John 5:18-20

Omnipotence

INTRO

“The foundation of all true knowledge of God must be a clear mental apprehension of His perfections as revealed in Holy Scripture. An unknown God can neither be trusted, served, nor worshipped.” – A.W. Pink

Omni – All

Potent – Powerful

Genesis 17:1, Jeremiah 32:17, Romans 8:28

God’s omnipotence describes his ability to do anything consistent with his nature.[1]

John MacArthur and Richard Mayhue, eds., page, 177.

Power refers to the divine attribute of being all-powerful (omnipotence). God can do everything that is proper for him as God to do. Examples include the creation out of nothing, the exodus, and the incarnation of the Son of God. Importantly, God cannot do certain things, such as sin, lie, do the logically absurd, die, break a promise, or be thwarted in his plans. Such “inabilities” are part of the perfection of God.

Gregg R. Allison, page, 84.

Power and control over everything “All mighty”

  • 2 Corinthians 6:18, Revelation 1:8

Nothing is too hard or impossible

  • Genesis 18:14, Luke 1:37, Matthew 19:26, Ephesians 3:20

God does what He pleases

  • Psalm 115:3

Closing thoughts

Therefore do not be anxious about your life Matthew 6:25-30
