John 18:28-19:16 – Jesus before Pilate
Are you really a king?
- 7 conversations between Pilate, Jesus, and the Jewish leaders.
- More of an interview than a trial
- Inside and Outside of the Governor’s Headquarters
18:28-32 (outside the governor’s headquarters)
- The Jewish leaders did not want to defile themselves by entering the Praetorium, but they had no problem handing over an innocent man to face judgement.
- What a picture of hypocrisy. False religion at its finest.
- “What accusations do you bring against this man?” It was he job to judge these matters.
- Jews 31“it is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.”
- In their eyes to be crucified would have proven that he was not truly the Messiah. YET, JESUS HIMSELF PREDICTED HE MUST BE LIFTED UP IN ORDER TO DEMONSTRATE HE WAS THE MESSIAH. John 12:32 – “When I am lifted up I will draw all men to myself.” 3:13 -Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— (ESV)
18:33-38a (inside with Jesus)
- His kingship is introduced 33 – “Are you the King of the Jews?” (Surely, the Jews have wrongly accused him. SURELY, HE WILL NOT ADMIT TO THESE CHARGES…THIS GUY A KING??
- Jesus interrogates the interrogator 34 “Have others told you this or did others say this to you about me?”
- Pilate v. 35 “What have you done?
- Seven signs/miracles Jesus preformed. Proving His deity.

- Healing the man blind from birth in John 9:1-7
- The raising of Lazarus in John 11:1-45
- Jesus 36 “My kingdom is not of this world”
- My kingdom is supernatural. Not political, religious, civil.
- Pilate 37a “So you are a King?”
- Jesus 37b “You say I am a king, for this purpose I was born, for this purpose I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”
- Pilate 38 “What is truth?”
- The one charged to judge and determine truth… is unable to recognize it.
- To Pilate Jesus was a philosophical teacher that was not threat.
18:38b-40 (outside with the Jewish leaders)
- Pilate declares Jesus innocent
- They want Barabbas
- He was a robber
- 10:18 – Jesus referred to the Jewish leaders as “thieves and robbers”
- 15:19 – at the last supper… “world will love their own”
19:1-3 (inside with Jesus)
- Jesus is flogged and mocked
- Typical before crucifixion, but also Pilate hoping this would suffice the Jewish leaders
- Crown and Robe (ROYAL POWER)
19:4-8 (outside with the Jewish leaders)
- Pilate presents him innocent
- BEHOLD THE MAN v. 5
- Jesus is not the man you say He is. Look He is a beaten man. How can He be a threat?
- Jews demand. Crucify Him v. 6
- He claims to be the “Son of God” v. 7
- The reason they wanted Him killed. To them it was blasphemy
- YET IT WAS THE TRUTH.
- OUR WORLD TODAY SCREAMS BLASPHEMY, BUT IT IS THE TRUTH.
- More afraid v. 8 “Son of God” would have made Pilate very nervous. They were very superstitious. ( 27:19 Wife’s dream was coming to pass. “having nothing to do with this righteous man. I have suffered much because of him today in a dream)
19:9-12 (inside with Jesus)
- Pilate questions Jesus.
- Where are you from v. 9
- Do you not know the power I have v.9
- Jesus responds. You have no authority over me v. 11
- Jewish leaders reminded Pilate who he was a friend to v. 12
19:13-16 (outside to the Jewish leaders)
- Pilate delivers Jesus over to be crucified
- Pilate 14 “behold your king”
- Jews 15“we have no king but Caesar.” John 1:11 – “He came to His own, but His own did not receive Him.”
Closing thoughts of all those involved:
- The Jewish leaders
- rejected Jesus as King, and by doing so revealed there true King. (Caesar, World, Satan).
- 1 John 2:16 [16] For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. (ESV)
- Caesar… A human power that would enable them to have their power.
- Yet it was Rome that ultimately that brought defeat to them (BROAD IS THE WAY THAT LEADS TO DESTRUCTION)
- Matthew 7:13–14 – [13] “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. [14] For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. (ESV)
- Pilate
- 3 times he wanted Jesus released.
- He was unwilling to stand on truth because of fear of men. (apostles creed… remember for all eternity for this)
- Jesus Christ
- Beaten, mocked, unjustly condemned and delivered up for crucifixion.
- Rejected by His own people. Yet gave His life for many!
- YET…HE WAS BRUISED FOR OUR INIQUITIES.
- Isaiah 53:3–7 – [3] He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. [4] Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. [5] But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. [6] All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—everyone—to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. [7] He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth. (ESV)
