John 2:1-12 – Jesus at the wedding

John 2:1-12 – Jesus attends a wedding

Look and Live – Believe and Live – Receive and Live

This is the first of Jesus signs in the Gospel of John.  A sign points to something. They were supernatural, yet symbolic. All the signs in John point to Jesus and who HE REALLY IS (all of scripture points to the Gospel)

 

The Wedding

  • John the Baptist was a voice crying out in the desert.
  • Jesus ministry was public and within the lives of the people in their daily activities
  • A wedding is a picture of the coming Kingdom and God’s relationship to Israel
    • Jeremiah 31:31-3431 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord.
    • Hosea – an unfaithful wife.

 

  • A picture of Christ and His Church

 

  • Eph 5:22-30 22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body

 

  • Revelation 21:2-3  Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

 

  • At this wedding, it is a celebratory time but based on external conditions.
    • Wine running out…joy to no joy
  • Mary and Jesus Conversation
    • Beginning of public ministry
    • From this point forward Mary’s relationship with him as not as son, but as Savior and Messiah
    • My time has not come….God’s timetable for the Cross.

 

The Wine

  • Moses turned water to blood…stood for judgment
  • Jesus turned water into wine and it stood for joy
  • There was a specific need that Jesus could meet. There is still a need that only Jesus can meet.
  • The pots stood for external cleansing (ceremonial cleansing) the wine is internal (filled to the brim… therefore nothing could have been added. It had to be a miracle)
  • New wine…the best wine. (nothing into something)
  • Jesus is the best wine. He is the new to the old.
  • Jesus’ creation of wine may be significant, prophetically. Jeremiah had foretold that in the Messianic age “they will rejoice in the bounty of the LORD—the grain, the new wine . . .” (Jeremiah 31:12). Amos said that Israel “will plant vineyards and drink their wine” (Amos 9:14). The association of the Messiah with a time of plenty—including freely flowing wine—makes Jesus’ first miraculous sign all the more meaningful.

 

Cup

  • Used as a reference for judgment. Yet because Jesus took the cup of wrath, we can drink from the cup of life.
  • Matthew 20:22 “Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?”  
  • Jeremiah 25:15tells us, “Thus the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me: ‘Take from my hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it.’
  • In Revelation 14:9-10, an angel speaks, “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, he also will drink the wine of God’s wrath, poured full strength into the cupof his anger”

 

The significance of the wedding:

  1. Display His Deity
  2. That results in Saving Faith
  • Look at Me
  • Believe in Me
  • Receive Me (acknowledge and trust in me for who I am)
  • Follow Me

 

The rest of the Gospel is spent playing this out.  The rest of the Gospel is a journey to the Cross.
