Intro

  • Friday of passion week
  • Pilate has turned Him over to be crucified
  • Matthew 27:31-56; Mark 15:20-41; John 19:16-30

The Backdrop

  • Arrested
  • Tried
  • Lead away
  • Scourged

The Crucifixion

  • The place called Skull/Golgotha
  • To fulfill Scripture(over (300 OT prophesies)
  • Isaiah 53; Psalm 22
  • With the criminals
  • Offered wine
  • Divided His garments
  • Pilates inscription. King of the Jews
  • Mary, her sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, Mary Magdalene
  • John and Mary. Behold your son/mother

The Reaction

Simon the Cyrene

  • Faithfulness in making the trip for Passover
  • Fear. Compelled him to carry. Matthew 27:32 Criminals carried their cross
  • Humility when he ultimately understood what had taken place
  • Mark mentions his sons…How would he know their names???? Mark 15:21

Women and the Crowd

  • Mary and company
  • Lamenting. Seeing Christ suffer.
  • The personal aspect of what Christ was enduring
  • Jesus. DO NOT WEEP FOR ME
  • You are the ones that are in need.
  • Judgment is coming.
  • They say the physical. Jesus addressed the spiritual

Those around the cross

  • Crowd, Soldiers, Religious Opponents
  • Watched, scoffed, and mocked.
  • Jesus’ prayer…forgive them
  • Jesus ‘sign – King of the Jesus

The Thieves on the Cross

  • Both were mocking him
  • Both asked for help
  • One was saved
  • FEARED GOD
  • REALIZED WHO HE WAS
  • TRUST IN WHO CHRIST WAS
What Now

The cross was meant to be the cruelest things man could do, but it became the greatest thing that God did.

  • Redemption
  • Forgiveness of Sin
  • FAITH, HOPE, LIFE
