My sermon notes for Sunday morning, October15th, these are my personal study notes and not a manuscript of the sermon. They are provided as an outline each week for our Tabernacle Church family. The church provides a live stream of the service each Sunday at 10:30 on Facebook. We also provide the services through YouTube by Sunday afternoon. You can find Sermon Notes, Family Devotional Guides, Prayer List, and other resources at our Church Website.
Luke 9:51-62
INTRO
- From this point to Luke 19… Jesus is on a journey to Jerusalem.
- Physical and spiritual journey
- The closer He gets to the cross the more hostility He faces
- The Village rejects
- The people must choose (the cost of discipleship)
- We either receive or reject. We either follow after or stay behind.
JESUS’ JOURNEY TO JERUSALEM
Days drew near / Taken up
- A deliberate act of obedience and purpose
- Fulfilling His redemptive purpose
- The Death, Resurrection, and Ascension
- The Cross and the Crown
- Up on the cross… ascending to the right hand of the Father
THE RESPONSE OF THE PEOPLE
The Samaritan Village
- They would not receive him
- To reject Him is to reject the Gospel
- Unwilling to help anyone headed to Jerusalem
- There was great division within the people
- North – Samaria
- South – Jerusalem
- Goes back to the days of the divided Kingdom.
- Mt Gerizim – the Samaritan place of worship
- Jerusalem – the Temple
- NO ROOM FOR JESUS
- Bethlehem
- Samaria
Follower 1 – Mission
- Counting the cost
- Earthly possessions
- THE MISSION OF BELIEVERS (GOING)
- Ephesians 2:10
- 2 Corinthians 5:11-21
Follower 2 – Priorities
- What we view as important
- He wanted to negotiate with Jesus (first)
- His responsibility was not sinful, but often the things that keep us from true commitment are not sinful (family, work, hobbies)
- Putting off (delay) what God is calling us to do
- OH, THE BLESSINGS WE ARE MISSING WITH DELAY!
Follower 3 – Focus
- Don’t look back (the journey)
- Go forward
- Finding our hope and purpose in the future and not the past
- Growing and maturing personally and spiritually.
- DOING MORE AS WE TRUST AND FOLLOW HIM
- THE BEST IS YET TO COME
