Matthew 6:9–15

INTRO THOUGHTS

  • Matt. 6:5-18 teaches on giving, praying, and fasting
  • Warning against the hypocritical life.
  • vv. 9-15 is often called the Lord’s Prayer…It could also be called the Model Prayer or Disciple’s Prayer.
    • HOW A RIGHTEOUS PERSON SHOULD PRAY

Divided in 2 parts

  • In relationship to God – HIS GLORY – vv. 9-10
    • His Holiness – v. 9
    • His Reign – v. 10a
    • His Rule and Purpose – v. 10b
  • In relationship to believers – OUR NEEDS – vv. 11-13
    • Our Physical – v. 11
    • Our Spiritual – vv. 12-15

Our Physical Needs – v. 11

Give us

  • the supplication
  • We are dependent upon Him.
  • We are to work, but we also realize that as we do our part that He IS doing His part.

This day our daily bread

  • Our daily needs (not our GREEDS)
  • One day at a time.  Ok to have a vision for the future, but the key is having a daily trust in His Provision.

Our Spiritual Needs – vv. 12-15

Forgive us our debts

Forgiveness and the spiritual debt owed to God

  • Once and for all – Regeneration (Born again)
    • Romans 5:1 – Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. (ESV)
  • Ongoing purging of self and sin – Our Sanctification (Maturing toward Christlikeness)
    • As a believer we should pray for a holy and clean life before the Lord
    • An intimate and on-going daily walk with Him
    • Growing and changing daily into the likeness of Christ.  This takes place as we practice the spiritual disciplines of worship, prayer, Bible study, giving, serving, witnessing….AS WE BELIEVE IN AND LIVE OUT THE BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES OF A CHRIST HONORING SPIRIT FILLED LIFE.

Colossians 1:28–29 – [28] Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. [29] For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me. (ESV)

Ephesians 4:13 – until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, (ESV)

As we have forgiven our debtors

Because our HUGE SIN DEBT has been forgiven…We should be able to forgive others.

And lead us not into temptation

Temptations/Trials/Testing

  • The danger is when it leads to the enticement to sin.
  • When difficulties come, we may wonder…. Is this from God – Is this from Satan
  • We all will face trials and testing.  WHEN WE ARE TEMPTED TO SIN as we walk through them.

James 1:2–4 – [2] Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, [3] for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. [4] And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. (ESV)

  • Opposite of joy is grumbling….in our trial we PUT GOD ON TRIAL. We question Him.

James 1:14 – But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. (ESV)

deliver us from the evil one

1 Corinthians 10:13 – No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. (ESV)

The Gospel/Jesus is enough to overcome the evil one.

  • Matt. 4:1-11 – He did it in the wilderness. (Wilderness Temptation)
  • John 19:30 – He did it on the Cross. “It is Finished”
  • Rom 8:37-39 – He continues to do it. “More than conquerors”

Truths to remember:

  • We do not need to worry about the evil one when we walk closely with the Lord.
  • Venturing out on our own exposes us to the temptations of the evil one. (ALONE…CHURCH BODY!!!!!!!!)
  • We are redeemed, but sin always comes with a cost.  Some sins come with a very high cost.

CONCLUSION

Colossians 2:13–15 – [13] And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, [14] by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. [15] He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him. (ESV)

WE WERE DEAD – BUT NOW ALIVE

He will meet our needs.

  • Both Physical and Spiritual
  • Only Christ can fulfill that promise.

The Righteous Life is about Righteous Prayer – Because of the RIGHTEOUS ONE.

Believe in Him – Trust in Him – Live for Him

SCRIPTURE

Matthew 6:9-15

[9] Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

[10] Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

[11] Give us this day our daily bread, [12] and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

[13] And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

[14] For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, [15] but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. (ESV)

Ephesians 4:11–16 – [11] And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, [12] to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, [13] until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, [14] so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. [15] Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, [16] from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love. (ESV)

James 1:12–15 – [12] Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. [13] Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. [14] But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. [15] Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. (ESV)

Romans 8:37–39 – [37] No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. [38] For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, [39] nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. (ESV)
