Micah 5:1-15 – “The Deliverer from Bethlehem”

Micah 5:1-15

INTRO

  • Chapters 1-3 the coming judgement (Punishment)
  • Chapters 4-5: The restoration to follow (Promise)
  • Chapters 6-7: The plea for repentance (Pardon)
  • The Lord, the Judge who scatters his people for their transgressions and sins, is also the Shepherd-King who in covenant faithfulness gathers, protects, and forgives them.[1]
  • Themes: – Judgment and Forgiveness
    • God will judge disobedience/sinners
    • God will keep his covenant promises (their will be a remnant)
    • Blessings on those that will repent

The Coming of the Messiah – vv. 1-5a

  • The now – King Zedekiah – 2 Kings 25:1-7
  • The not yet – Jesus born in Bethlehem – Matthew 2:1-12

First Advent – v. 2

  • Whose coming forth is from old, from ancient days

In between – v. 3a

Second Advent – vv.3b-4

  • He shall stand and shepherd His flock in the strength of the Lord

The Victory of the Messiah – vv. 5b-15

He delivers – v. 5b-6

  • Then he will raise against them
  • He shall deliver us

He empowers – vv. 7-9

  • Then the remnant
  • Like the dew from the Lord
  • Among the nations, in the midst of many people

God will strengthen the people

  • Lion
  • Hand shall be lifted up over your adversaries

He ultimately conquers – vv. 10-15

  • I will cut off
  • Horses, chariots, cities

v. 15 – And in anger and wrath I will execute vengeance on the nations that did not obey.
