Roots of the Faith – An Intro and Why it Matters

Over the next few months we will be digging deep into God’s Word to learn more about key biblical truths that are foundational to our Christian faith. My goal is not just to give information, but rather information that will change the way we live our life. I am calling these truths the Roots of the Faith.

INTRO

  • Why this topic?
    • Jeremiah 17:7-8
    • Psalm 1:1-6
    • Part of our on-going discipleship ministry at TAB
  • Why Roots?
  • Tree Analogy
    • Support
    • Nourishment
    • Fruit

Our roots determine our spiritual health and our fruits

  • Our Theology Drives our Methodology
  • Our beliefs impact our thinking. Our thinking impacts our behavior
    • Our actions are an indication of our mind and heart
    • Our desires lead to choices (our will to do something)
Romans 8:4–8 - [4] in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. [5] For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. [6] For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. [7] For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. [8] Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. (ESV)

With Strong Roots:

We will be people who stand firm in the faith

  • Make a stand. I know I am saved
  • Continuing in the faith
2 Thessalonians 2:13–17 - [13] But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. [14] To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. [15] So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter.

[16] Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, [17] comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word. (ESV)

We will be people who are not be taken captive

  • Falling prey to the thinking of the world
  • If I know what is right… I can recognize what is wrong
Colossians 2:6–9 - [6] Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, [7] rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

[8] See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. [9] For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, (ESV)

We will be people of fruitful perseverance

  • Finishing faithful
  • Bearing fruit
  • Wise decisions in life.
    • the dangers of mounting bad decisions
    • the joys of the foundation of good decisions
2 Peter 1:3–11 - [3] His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, [4] by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. [5] For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, [6] and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, [7] and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. [8] For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. [9] For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins. [10] Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. [11] For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (ESV)

We will be people of truth

  • We shall not be shaken
  • On solid ground, unwavering.
1 Timothy 3:14–15 - [14] I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, [15] if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth. (ESV)
Psalm 62:1–2

[1] For God alone my soul waits in silence;
from him comes my salvation.
[2] He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken. (ESV)

2 Peter 1:10-11 – “Confirming your Calling and Election”

True Believers May Struggle at Times

(Doubting is not the same as unbelief)

Living in this world may cause seasons of doubt

  • Trials and circumstances of life.
  • We struggle with sin
  • Health (sickness, fatigue, depression)

Spiritual immaturity

  • Lack of growth.  Babes in Christ

Sin and how we deal with it.

  • How can I keep doing this if I am saved?
  • Why am I tempted if I am saved?

Comparisons to other believers

  • They are doing fine, but I continue to struggle.
  • Look how spiritual they are.

Childhood conversion

  • Hard for us to remember when we were lost
  • The understanding of sin is different as an adult

SPIRITUAL MATURITY IS KEY HERE!!!! GROW AND CHANGING INTO THE LIKENESS OF CHRIST.

Unbelievers May Have a False Assurance

Matthew 7:21-23 (last Sunday)

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ (ESV)

The Basis of True Assurance

The Character of God

2 Timothy 1:12 – which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me. (ESV)

Not me, but whom I have believed

  • God is…
  • His attributes (all powerful, all wise, all loving)
  • His Grace saved me. His Grace will keep me
  • He is perfect
    • Perfect wrath toward the unrepentant
    • Perfect mercy toward the repentant
  • Saves, Empowers, Keeps

Philippians 1:3–63 I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. 6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. (ESV)

Completed work of Christ

Luke 19:10 – For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” (ESV)

John 10:10 – The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. (ESV)

Romans 5:17 – For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. (ESV)

Repentance and Faith

  • Turned from self and our sin
  • Turned to Christ and His righteousness

His forgiveness, acceptance, and presence.

God’s Word (His promises)

John 3:16-18

16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. (ESV)

John 5:24 – Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. (ESV)

Acts 2:21 – And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ (ESV)

John 10:27–30 – 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.30 I and the Father are one.” (ESV)

Romans 8:16 – The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, (ESV)

The What Now

  • You have repented of your sin and placed your faith in Jesus Christ to forgive you and save you.
  • Embrace your life in Christ and live for Him.

Assurance may be experienced partly through the presence of the attitudes and actions the Bible says will accompany salvation. (Whitney’s Book)

  1. Do you share the intimacies of the Christian life with other believers?
  2. Do you have a deep awareness of your sin against the Word and love of God?
  3. Do you live in conscious obedience to the Word of God?
  4. Do you despise the world and its ways?
  5. Do you long for the return of Jesus Christ and to be made like Him?
  6. Do you habitually do what is right more and sin less?
  7. Do you love Christians sacrificially and want to be with them?
  8. Do you discern the presence of the Holy Spirit within you?
  9. Do you enjoy listening to the doctrines of the apostles taught today?
  10. Do you believe what the Bible teaches about Jesus Christ?
