Luke 20:27-40

INTRO

  • The Sadducees question Jesus.
  • They did not believe in the resurrection.
  • Jesus was stirring things up in the city and their circle of influence.
    • They were leaders of the Sanhedrin
    • More prominent in society

Most members of the Sanhedrin, the central judicial authority of Jewish people, were Sadducees. Thus, the Sadducees were the party of those with political power, those allied with the Herodian and Roman rulers, but they were not a group with influence among the people themselves. The views of the Pharisees prevailed among the common people, so that even though the two groups differed with regard to items in the laws of purity and details of temple procedure during the feasts, the Sadducean priests were compelled to operate according to the Pharisees’ views.[1]

The Question by the Sadducees

  • If a man’s brother dies…seven times. Whose wife will she be after the resurrection
  • Deuteronomy 25:5-10
  • They did not believe in the resurrection, so they were painting a picture that would seem difficult to answer.

The Answer by Jesus

  • The sons of THIS AGE marry and are given in marriage.
    • Life… marriage and children. Fill the earth
  • Those that attain THAT AGE neither marry nor are given in marriage.
    • Not everyone goes to heaven.
    • Those considered worthy. v. 35
    • Those in heaven, will never die. v. 36
  • Rebukes their teaching on the resurrection. v. 37 Moses at the burning bush. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
  • God is the God of the living. v. 38

The Application for Us Today

Everyone will eventually die (if the Lord does not return first)

Our soul leaves the body at death

  • Believers to paradise (Present state of Heaven) Luke 23:43
  • Abrahams bosom Luke 16:22. Third heaven 2 Corinthians 12:2
  • Unbelievers to hades. (The present state of hell)

Do not confuse the temporal with the eternal

  • THIS AGE and THAT AGE
  • Heaven is the fulfillment of the BEST
  • THE FULLNESS OF BEING A CHILD OF GOD
  • John 1:12; Galatians 4:5-7, 1 John 3:1-2

We tend to want heaven to be the best of our time on earth.

  • Relationships
  • Rewards
  • Heaven is the fulfillment of the BEST
  • We will be transformed and live in a transformed existence. 1 Corinthians 15:35-58

Whether here or there. Those in Christ will live forever!

  • John 11:25-26

John 20:19-23 – “I am Sending You”

John 20:19–23 - On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”

INTRO

  • Easter Sunday is so much more than an empty tomb
  • It is what that empty tomb accomplished
  • The resurrection is everything
  • Validates all that Jesus has said
  • He is the Messiah. He is God
  • From Old to New
  • Provides us our Power, Purpose and Hope 1 Cor. 15:1-58
  • We must listen to the Words of Jesus… HE IS SENDING YOU.
  • The Apostle John lays it out perfectly. (His life was a perfect example) HOW TO GO. HOW TO GO AND LIVE FOR JESUS.

Respond to the Gospel

John 5:24 – Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.

John 20:30–31 30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Keep the Word

1 John 2:3-63 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: 6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.

  • Watch closely. Guarding a prisoner
  • Desire to please.  Obedience is based on understanding.
  • FOLLOW JESUS.  FOLLOW THE WORD.
  • LOVE, READ, MEDITATE
  • LIVING OUT THE GOSPEL!

Psalm 119:9 How can a young man keep his way pure?
By guarding it according to your word.

Psalm119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Love Others

1 John 3:16-18 – 16 By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 17 But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? 18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.

  • OTHERS, OTHERS, OTHERS,
  • His love toward us
  • Our love toward others
    • If we receive
    • We should give

Daily Walk in Fellowship with Him

1 John 5:13-1513 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.

1 Corinthians 15:1-11The Gospel Changes Everything

INTRO

  • The entire chapter is a doctrinal message on the resurrection
  • They were doubting the truthfulness of the resurrection.
  • Evidently, they were questioning the resurrection of believers
  • Here (vv. 1-11) Paul is reminding/making known to them the GOSPEL.  There is not Gospel w/o the resurrection

INTRO:

  • Resurrection Sunday is upon us!
  • Friday at our luncheon we consider Jesus’ words on the cross… IT IS FINISHED John 19:30
  • He completed the task prophesied in the OT. Isaiah 53:1-12
  • He competed the task.  He made all things NEW. Rev 21:5 (already and not yet)
  • That is great news for us today.  To have a relationship with Christ makes ALL THINGS NEW.  WE BECOME AND LIVE A NEW CREATIONS.
  • Let us consider the great truths from the events of His glorious resurrection.
  • Easter Sunday is not an event… it is all about a personal relationship
  • A relationship that offers… Rest, Forgiveness, Victory, Assurance, and Satisfaction

REST

First day of the week – v. 1

  • Lord’s Day. (Friday night, Saturday, Sunday morning – 3 days)
  • Sabbath was a day of rest after the finished work of the OT.  CREATION
  • Lord’s Day is the finished work of the NT.  NEW CREATION
  • Sabbath Rest was a temporary… Jesus is a permanent rest
  • Hebrews 4:9-11

FORGIVENESS

Mary Magdalene – v. 1

  • Much indebted to Christ for the forgiveness of sin.
  • She was so devoted to her REDEEMER
    • THIS IS MISSING TODAY.  WE THINK SO LITTLE OF OUR SAVIOR BECAUSE WE THINK SO LITTLE OF OUR SIN.

VICTORY

Earthquake – v. 2

  • At his crucifixion Matt. 27:51
  • At his resurrection (the aftershock!)
  • It points to the supernatural, the power
  • IT IS FINISHED. Nothing else needs to be done.
  • FAITH IS THE VICTORY.

ASSURANCE

The Angle and the Stone – v. 2

  • Lazarus stone was rolled way by man.  Jesus’s stone was rolled away by God/angels.
  • Lazarus stone was rolled away so he could come out. Jesus stone was rolled away so they could look in
  • Do not fear
  • He has risen
  • Come and see
    • Grave clothes not in disarray (not taken)
    • The language conveys that they were still in the form of a body.  No unwrapping.
    • LAZARUS NEEDED HELP WITH HIS GRAVE CLOTHS, JESUS DID NOT.
  • Go and tell

SATISFACTION

The Words from Christ – v.9

  • Greetings “JOY TO YOU”
  • And they worship Him
  • JOYFUL WORSHIP
