My notes for Wednesday night, May 7th. Remember, these are my personal study notes and not a manuscript of the teaching. They are provided as an outline each week for our Tabernacle Church family. Our study over the next few months will be a study on Hermeneutics: Becoming Students and Teachers of the Word. Our goal is to develop tools to help us read, study, apply, and share the Bible more effectively. Hermeneutics – HERMENEUEIN to explain or interpret.  The term simply describes the practice and discipline of interpretation.

Luke 24:27 – And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted (HERMENEUEIN) to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. (ESV) (Jesus on the road to Emmaus with Cleopas and his companion.

  • A passion for God.
  • An understanding of the importance of Scripture

TO A HIGH VIEW OF SCRIPTURE

  • What the Bible says, God says.
  • What God says, we must say.

TO THE PROFITABILITY OF ALL SCRIPTURE

2 Timothy 3:14-17

  • All of the Bible is inspired
  • Fits together perfectly
  • Builds up

TO THE SUFFICIENCY OF SCRIPTURE

Proverbs 30:5-6; Matthew 4:4; Psalm 119

  • Since the Word is inspired and truthful
  • The Bible is enough
  • Sola Scriptura – Scripture Alone

TO RIGHTLY DIVIDE THE WORD OF TRUTH

2 Timothy 2:15

  • The goal is the meaning of the passage
  • Not what I think, but what God has said

TO BECOMING A LIFELONG STUDENT

1 Peter 2:2

  • We must be teachable
  • We never have it all figured out
  • The Bible is a well that never goes dry
