Sunday we looked at Luke 22:39-46. We saw Jesus praying in the Garden with great anguish as He anticipated the cross. It is a clear picture of His humanity. We know that Jesus is God, but have we considered the aspect of His humanity. Work through the following info as we consider the humanity of Christ.
Finally, the prayer is intensely human. “Take this cup from me” is a window of crystal clarity into the soul of Jesus, in whom every human being recognizes his own soul. The prayer of v. 42 is not the prayer of a resigned Stoic or dispassionate ascetic. It is the prayer of one who experiences the fierce claim of his human will over against the divine will. This prayer is Jesus’ incarnate testimony that faith is a struggle to submit to the divine will in the face of counterclaims of the human will. The tension produced by these two wills engulfs Jesus not simply in mental anguish but in “anguish of soul”.
