Isaiah 1:1-31– The Holy One of Israel
The name Isaiah – The Lord is Salvation
- Salvation – 27 times in Isaiah
Chapters 1-39 – Man’s great need of salvation.
Chapters 40-66 – God’s great provision of salvation.
One of the major themes – God’s surpassing plan of grace and mercy.
The Setting
Political upheaval
- Four different Kings (He ministered 740-681 B.C.)
War
- The ongoing threat of Assyria form the North to the Northern Kingdom (ultimate conquer in 722 B.C.)
Religious apostasy
- Not truly worshiping/following after God. (God… not a god in their eyes)
The People
Judah – The Southern Kingdom
- God’s Covenant People
- They had received so much from the Lord, yet had “despised the Holy one of Israel” 1:2-4
Their Heart (behavior = heart)
Hardness n- vv. 4-5
- Head/heart v. 5
- Not listening (not putting themselves in a place to listen)
- Which in turn leads to hypocrisy, false worship, empty prayers, faithless
Rebellion – v. 10
- Do those things that God has not intended for them to do.
- Alliances with false nations/gods
- Leaders of Sodom and Gomorrah
Idolatry – vv. 11-15, v. 21-22

God’s Promises
God is always faithful and just (He is always faithful to His Word
Repent – vv. 16-17
- Live right
- Do right
Forgiveness – vv. 18-20 (His grace and mercy)
- Come – cleanliness brings about pardon
- White as snow
- 1 John 1:9–10 – [9] If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. [10] If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. (ESV)
Lack of repentance, demonstrates the real HEART, this is followed by God’s justice.
Purge – vv. 24-25, vv. 27-31
- If unwilling to repent, then judgement will follow.
Restoration – vv. 26-27
- God will keep his promises. A REMNANT.
- Already and not yet. People of Israel and Jesus.
- “Zion shall be redeemed by justice”- v. 27, the truth is that Christ alone comes to be both the “just and the justifier”
- Romans 3:21–26 – [21] But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—[22] the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: [23] for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, [24] and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, [25] whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. [26] It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. (ESV)
