Philippians 2:5-11
INTRO
- The previous verses were an exhortation for humility and unity.
- These verses are the example of humility seen in Christ
- Some view this passage as an hymn of the early church that Paul incorporated into his letter
- We can live out the humble life because Christ has… and we are in HIM
- JESUS, OUR ULTIMATE EXAMPLE OF HUMILITY
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,
Have this mind v. 5
- Have the same attitude as Christ
- John 13:12-17
- YOURS IN Christ Jesus
PREEXISTENCE
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,
Form of God
- Morphe – the essential form
- The essence of His nature
- Continuance state. Unchanging
Did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped
- Jesus did not cling to His position
INCARNATION
7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
He emptied Himself
- Kenosis
- He did not empty himself of His deity. HE DID NOT BECOME LESS GOD
- He added humanity
CRUCIFIXTION
8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Took the form of a servant
- THIS IS HOW HE EMPTIED HIMSELF
- Taking…adding. Added to His nature as God.
He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross
- Death on the cross. For our sins.
RESURRECTION AND EXALTATION
9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Fath
God exalted Him
- His new identity as the redeemer
- Ransom has been paid…IT IS FINISHED
Bestowed upon Him the name above every name
- Jesus – Savior
- Lord – authoritative, ruling
Every knee shall bow, and every tongue confess
- Bowing to His sovereignty
- Every knee…Everyone and Everywhere
- Confess – Acknowledge, affirm, agree
Jesus in Lord, to the glory of God the Father
CONCLUSION
What a glorious picture of Christ!
- He life, death, and exaltation
What a great example of humility
My goal should be:
Total dedication to Him
- To His Lordship
Total denial of self
- LIVE FOR HIM
- LIVE FOR OTHERS
