Luke 17:1-10 – “Lessons on Discipleship”

My sermon notes for Sunday morning, June 14th.  Remember, these are my personal study notes and not a manuscript of the sermon. They are provided as an outline each week for our Tabernacle Church family. The church provides a live stream of the service each Sunday at 10:30 on Facebook. We also provide the services through YouTube by Sunday afternoon.  You can find Sermon Notes, Family Devotional Guides, Prayer List, and other resources at our Church Website.

Luke 17:1-10

Intro

  • Jesus turns His teaching to the Disciples.
  • Teaching on Discipleship
  • Sin, Faith, and Service

Sin – vv. 1-4

Temptation

  • Temptation is not sin, but the desire that leads to sin
  • A stumbling block, causes to fall
  • 1 Corinthians 10:12-13

TEMPTATION The devil tempts people to sin. But temptation comes from within us as well (James 1:13–15). The way to deal with temptation is to do exactly what Jesus did when He was tempted (Matthew 4:1–11). He countered every temptation with Scripture. That means that counselees—as well as all Christians—must learn a good bit of Scripture to deal adequately with temptation. Jesus did not say, “Well, let Me look up a passage or two” before He responded to the evil one. Like Joshua was told to do (Joshua 1:8), Jesus had Scripture ready at hand to use..

Woe to those that cause others to stumble

  • Our life matters… our actions and words matter.
  • Our freedoms as a Christian need to be considered as we think about perception.
  • Setting a bad spiritual example (home, work…)
  • “These little ones”
    • Young believers. Babes in Christ

Dealing with sin

  • In our life…PAY ATTENTION
  • In the life of other believers.
    • Do I have the right to address them (A brother in Christ)
    • Do I love them enough to care
  • Rebuke – point out for the purpose of change
    • Stern warning
    • “Not to be right” or embarrass, but to help
    • Social media is not the biblical approach
  • Repent – sorrow, turning, moving on.
  • Forgive – Rebuke and Forgive…both

Galatians 6:1

Matthew 18:15-20

Ephesians 4:15,32

The strong position against sin set forth in the previous point must be balanced by a gracious, forgiving attitude toward sinners. Humble believers do not give offense, but neither do they take offense. They avoid sinning against others, but they also do not hold a grudge when others sin against them (cf. Luke 11:4).[1]

Faith – vv. 5-6

Increase our faith

  • In light of living in the reality of sin.
  • The difficulty of forgiving others.
  • REAL FAITH IS NEEDED TO LIVE IN THIS WORLD

Faith like a mustard seed

  • Small yet alive
  • Growing

Faith is trusting in HIM…Not believing in us.

  • HE IS STILL ON HIS THRONE
  • He is sending out in HIS NAME

Service – vv. 7-10

As we flee from sin… grow in our faith…  must continue to serve!

Jesus came to serve, not be served. (Mark 10:45)

We must remain faithful to what God is calling us to do.

  • We serve Christ, therefor others)…it is who we are!
  • We are called to serve, not be served

WE SERVE NOT TO RECEIVE

  • Reward or Recognition

WE DO NOT SERVE OUT OF MERE DUTY

  • We serve because we ARE HIS (we get too)

WE SERVE AS AN ACT OF WORSHIP AND JOY
