Luke 19:11-27

INTRO

  • Parable of the minas
  • The coming of the Kingdom.
  • A lesson on faithful and unfaithful servants
  • Already… not yet.
  • Living faithfully in the now

A Little Background

  • Herod the Great died 4BC
  • His son, Archelaus went to Rome to claim the throne of Judea
  • Upon his arrival he faced opposition from family members seeking throne and Jewish leaders who opposed his rule
  • Eventually, he was crowned as ruler and returned to Judea.
  • This would have been a vivid memory

The Reason for the Parable

  • Their view of the coming Kingdom… they were entering Jerusalem.
  • Political/Military in nature. Conquering Rome.
  • Establishing a current earthy power (earthly vs eternal)

The Parable

  • Nobleman’s kingdom
  • The servant’s responsibility
  • His rejection
  • His return
  • The Day of reckoning

The Parable’s Application Today

The Christian’s View of the Kingdom

  • Health, wealth, and prosperity
  • A good life. Success.
  • Or… the rule and reign of God over His creation.
    • Therefore… what is our role in the Kingdom.
    • OUR PURPOSE

Christ’s Servants

  • Believers in Jesus Christ
  • Given the Gospel responsibility to live in the Now (our mina)
  • We are called to be faithful
  • Entrusted with the Gospel (What it did and what it does)
  • As we believe and invest the Gospel (OUR PURPOSE)
  • INVESTING THE GOSPEL WITH OUR LIFE
  • Our relationship with Him and Them (The Gospel impacts our relationships)
    • Me, Family, Friends, Co-workers, Others (people of my influence)
  • ARE PEOPLE KNOWING AND GROWING BECAUSE OF MY IMPACT, INFLUENCE, INVESTMENT

Christ’s Return

  • One day Jesus is going to return
  • The servants gave credit to the money,,, not their effort…it is the power of the Gospel. Romans 1:16
  • Accountability
    • It is not based on what we can DO. (our activity)
    • But what He has given us… the Gospel
    • Not the who or the how, but the what
    • Matthew 5:13-16 – Light and Darkness…. LIGHT ALWAYS WINS (ACCOMPLISHES ITS PURPOSE)

The Servants Rewards

  • More… more Gospel stuff.
  • Now
    • More blessings of obedience (joy of obedience)

The Servant’s Punishment

  • Did nothing
  • Pride
  • Rebellion
  • Fear

The Enemies Judgement

  • Who do not acknowledge who He truly is (not their reigning Lord)
  • Eternal judgement (slaughtered)
