Luke 1:67-79 – “Zechariah’s Prophesy and Praise”

Luke 1:67-79

INTRO

  • After the birth of John the Baptist.
  • Zechariah was mute, but now is able to speak
  • His first words were a praise to God for that He has done. v. 67
  • Then he prophesies about the forerunner and the Savior
  • His words point to the greatness of God’s grace and mercy

Empowered by God… He brings forth praise and prophecy

  • Filled with the Holy Spirit – v. 67
    • Empowered by God
    • Authoritative

God has provided THE redeemer – vv. 68-73

God has visited – v. 68a

  • God came to man
  • It was personal to him

God has redeemed His people- v. 68b

  • Delivered them
  • Made Them His own

God has raised up a victor – v. 69-71

  • Knew John and Jesus we the promise of the Messiah
  • horn of salvation. Conquering King
  • Psalm 132:17 – There I will make a horn to sprout for David; I have prepared a lamp for my anointed. (ESV)

God has been faithful – vv. 72 – 73

  • Promised to our fathers
  • The fulfilment of His promises
  • God did what He said He would do.
  • God’s plan was always His plan.
  • From Gen. 12 till now.

God has established a NEW relationship – vv. 74-75

Delivered from our enemies

  • Restored and renewed (Gen 1)
  • Personal and New

SO THAT… might serve without fear

  • Worship and Service
  • In holiness and righteousness
    • Because of the righteousness of Christ.  (Veil torn)
  • Before Him
    • Worship due to our relationship.
    • For all days

God has ushered in a NEW day – vv. 76-79

  • John the Baptist is ushering in a NEW DAY.  (New Covenant)
  • He is the forerunner of the Messiah
  • Malachi 3:1 – “Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts. (ESV)
  • Malachi 4:5 – “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. (ESV)

This new Day brings with it:

  • THE ALREADY AND NOT YET – FUTURE GLORY IS NOW, YET NOT FULLY
  • Isaiah 60:1-3 – [1] Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you. [2] For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise upon you, and his glory will be seen upon you. [3] And nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising. (ESV)
  • v. 77 – the knowledge of salvation in the forgiveness of sins.
    • Spirit will come to convict and point to Jesus.
    • Provide true forgiveness.
  • v. 78 – Because of God’s tender mercies.
  • v. 79 – given a new light
    • To give light to those in darkness.
    • The darkness of the Old.  The light of the New.
    • To Guide one’s feet in peace
      • Peace with God
      • Peace with others
    • Provide the hope and direction of a new WAY of life.

Luke 1:67-79 – [67] And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying, [68] “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people [69] and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, [70] as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, [71] that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us; [72] to show the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant, [73] the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us [74] that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear,[75] in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

[76] And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, [77] to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins [78] because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high [79] to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” (ESV)
