Psalm 6 – “Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am languishing”

My teaching notes for Wednesday, June 2nd. I am currently teaching through the book of Psalms.  Remember, these are my personal study notes and not a manuscript of the teaching.

Psalm 6

INTRO THOUGHTS:

  • A Penitential Psalm. Could David be in despair over sin?
  • A picture of sorrow, repentance, & then joy
  • A person in deep despair finding their hope in the Lord.
  • The Lord hears the broken hearted.

Crying out to God – vv. 1-5

To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments; according to The Sheminith. A Psalm of David.

[1] O LORD, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath.  [2] Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am languishing; heal me, O LORD, for my bones are troubled. [3] My soul also is greatly troubled. But you, O LORD—how long?

[4] Turn, O LORD, deliver my life; save me for the sake of your steadfast love. [5] For in death there is no remembrance of you; in Sheol who will give you praise?

Rebuke me not…nor discipline me. – v. 1

  • The burden was so heavy, David felt as if the Lord was disciplining him.

Be gracious…heal me – v. 2

  • David knows it was only God’s grace and mercy that could deliver him from such a situation.

I am languishing…bones are troubled…soul greatly troubled – vv. 2-3

  • The magnitude of the situation
  • Notice the depth of his sorrow.  Bones and Soul.

How long – v. 3

  • It was as if David could not complete the sentence “How long until you deliver me?”

Turn and deliver – v. 4

  • As David is “turning” repenting… He is calling out to God to turn as well.  (From a human perspective…it is as if he is calling on God to change the course of the situation)

For the sake of your steadfast love – v. 4

  • The essence of redemption… GOD’S STEADFAST LOVE
  • In suffering, in peace, in sorrow, in joy… GOD IS LOVE!!!!!!!!

In Sheol who will give you praise – v. 5

  • In the OT the emphasis was on the living.
  • In the NT we see the joys of heaven. Rev. 4:11
  • In this context the thought was… let me live free from the suffering so that my life may truly praise you.

A Description of His Sorrow – vv. 6-7

[6] I am weary with my moaning; every night I flood my bed with tears; I drench my couch with my weeping. [7] My eye wastes away because of grief; it grows weak because of all my foes.

Weary and weeping and wasting away – vv. 6-7

  • The sorrows of alone at night.  The mind consumed with the suffering and situation.
  • Many tears…flood
  • The grief is heavy, real, and not relenting

A Renewed Declaration – vv. 8-10

[8] Depart from me, all you workers of evil, for the LORD has heard the sound of my weeping. [9] The LORD has heard my plea; the LORD accepts my prayer. [10] All my enemies shall be ashamed and greatly troubled; they shall turn back and be put to shame in a moment. (ESV)

Depart from me – v. 8

  • Acknowledging the wrong of it and turning from it.
  • Realizing the sin of allowing it to control you (the suffering causing you to sin)

The Lord has heard. The Lord accepts my prayer – vv. 8-9

  • The lord HEARD DAVID’S HEART.  Praying in such a way that one is open and honest to God about their feelings over the circumstances.

All the enemies will be ashamed and troubled – v. 10

  • God always blessing those that are His and judges those that opposed to Him.
  • It may appear like the world is winning at times…. BUT THERE IS A PAYDAY SOMEDAY!
