My sermon notes for Sunday morning, May 30th. Remember, these are my personal study notes and not a manuscript of the sermon.  They are provided to help you follow the sermon as you listen each week. The church provides a live stream of the service each Sunday at 10:45 on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/firstbaptistavonpark/  We also provide the services through YouTube on our website by Sunday afternoon at www.fbcap.net

1 Cor. 11:17-34 [17] But in the following instructions I do not commend you, because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse. [18] For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you. And I believe it in part, [19] for there must be factions among you in order that those who are genuine among you may be recognized. [20] When you come together, it is not the Lord’s supper that you eat. [21] For in eating, each one goes ahead with his own meal. One goes hungry, another gets drunk. [22] What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I commend you in this? No, I will not.

[23] For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, [24] and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” [25] In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” [26] For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

[27] Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. [28] Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. [29] For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. [30] That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. [31] But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged. [32] But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.

[33] So then, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another—[34] if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home—so that when you come together it will not be for judgment. About the other things I will give directions when I come. (ESV)

DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME

As we gather today for Baptism and the Lord’s Supper we have a great opportunity to reflect upon the goodness of the Gospel. To reflect and remember who we are in Jesus Christ.

  • Who He is
  • Why He came
  • What it means to us

To remember why we gather and worship in this manner today… observing the Lord’s Supper.

WHAT WE NEED TO REMEMBER AS A CHURCH

Jesus is Head of the Church – v. 18-22

The Church is the Lord’s. Jesus is the Head. (Not us)

Colossians 1:15–20

[15] He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. [16] For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. [17] And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. [18] And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. [19] For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, [20] and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. (ESV)

Unity and Fellowship (they were missing this)

  • same purpose
  • same mission
  • SAME SAVIOR
  • SAME CALLING

We are unified around HIM… not unified around us.

  • OK to have structure and plans within a church… but be careful
  • But notice what gets most people upset about (personal stuff)

We are part of a Gospel Family! (The importance of belonging to His Church)

The Meaning of the Gospel – vv. 23-25

Christ’s Sinless Life and Atoning Death

  • So that our sins may be forgiven

This is my body, which is for you

  • Perfect sacrifice

This cup is the new covenant in my blood

  • An atonement for our sin. Our Sins forgiven.
  • New covenant.  Based on grace

Think about it….THE POWER OF THE GOSPEL!

Our Mission as Believers – v. 26

We are proclaiming the Cross until He returns

  • each one of us

you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes

  • Incarnation
  • Death
  • Resurrection
  • Return

Live like HE IS LORD!

Continuously Check our Heart – vv. 27-34

Examine – discern & prove

  • Prove who you are…examine your heart and see who you are

Take part in an unworthy manner

To acknowledge His Lordship without Embracing His Lordship
